The holidays are a wonderful time but they can also be stressful. Don't let that stress lead to illness. Here are some great ways to fight off the common cold.

More than 200 different types of viruses can cause the common cold. Given that, it’s not surprising to know that there are millions of cases every year.

A respiratory infection, it often leads to coughing, sneezing, fatigue, and congestion. Depending on your health, these symptoms can last anywhere from 7 to 10 days.

Have a trip planned for the holidays? Want to know how to stay healthy while traveling? If so, you’re on the right page.

Because that’s what we’ll be talking about. Keep reading to learn more!

What's the Difference Between the Cold and the Flu?

The common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses. While they share a few common symptoms (e.g. sneezing, congestion), the latter tends to be more severe.

For one thing, it can lead to ear and sinus infections. High fevers are also more common. In some cases, it can even turn into pneumonia—an infection that affects the lungs.

5 Tips on How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Want to stay healthy for your upcoming trip? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Wash Your Hands Often

Regular handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Start by wetting your hands with running water. From there, add soap.

Lather your hands by rubbing them together. Make sure to get the back of your hands and between your fingers.

Scrub for at least 20 seconds before rinsing clean with water. Dry with a paper towel.

2. Avoid Touching Your Face

Do not touch your face with unwashed hands. Why? The germs on your hands can easily enter your body through your eyes, nose, and mouth.

If you must touch your face, at least do it after washing your hands. Consider using hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

3. Get Enough Sleep

A lack of sleep can affect your immune system. In fact, studies have shown that those who are sleep-deprived are much more likely to get sick.

For this reason, you want to make sure that you’re getting enough rest. Ideally, you want to aim for at least 7 hours.

This is supported by a system of medicine called Ayurveda, which has been used for over 5,000 years in India.

4. Disinfect "High Touch" Surfaces

Make a habit of disinfecting “high touch surfaces.” For example, it’s a good idea to disinfect light switches, elevator buttons, handrails, and doorknobs before touching them.

After all, germs can live on surfaces for several hours. You never know when they might be hitching a ride on your hands!

5. Keep Your Distance From Sick People

This goes without saying but you want to keep a safe distance from those who’re sick. Avoid close contact such as shaking hands, hugging, or kissing.

Move away if someone's about to cough or sneeze. If necessary, wash your hands with soap and water.

Staying Healthy For the Holidays

Hopefully, that gives you a better idea as to how to stay healthy while traveling. If anything, the most important thing is to wash your hands frequently!

How to Support Someone Starting Recovery from Addiction

If you're wondering how to support someone just beginning the recovery process, you're about to embark on a bumpy road that requires tremendous strength. It's not something you can really control; it's just something you have to be present for.

But, believe it or not, your love and support can mean the difference between recovery and failure. Sure, the addict has to want to change for themselves, but they'll be in desperate need of a shoulder to cry on, whether they can admit it or not. Here are five ways to help you roll up your sleeves and start changing a life for the better.

1. Educate Yourself

Addiction recovery is a very complex topic and almost every addict responds differently. This makes the learning curve steep. Spend a few days reading everything you can. Understand what triggers are (and what your loved ones may look like).

See if you can clarify the difference between support and enablement. Seek to understand the various physiological and emotional changes that are about to happen as someone detoxes from the harmful chemicals in their system.

2. Don't Crucify Them for Backsliding

When someone's spent an extended amount of time under the stronghold of addiction, it seems impossible to live a life without the drink or drug. The trouble is, every time an addict stops and then picks the drink or drug back up again, each new "high" will be worse.

And they'll need more and more to achieve said "high." So, if they should happen to backslide, don't crucify them. It's already worse for them. Just hold their hand, be their non-judgmental support system, and help them get back on the pathway to recovery.

3. Have Empathy

Backslides aside, remember to have some empathy for your loved one. Sure, you might say they got themselves into this mess. But, they're here now and, if they're about to enter into withdrawal, the pain can be excruciating.

According to Inspire Malibu hydrocodone addiction treatment center, some of the withdrawal symptoms from pain pills can include fever, cold sweats, vomiting, cramping, insomnia, and depression. That's quite a mountain to climb.

4. Clean House

If your loved one is in a treatment facility and about to re-enter your home, make a clean sweep of the house. Do them the favor of removing any addictive substances. Clean their room; create a fresh, new space.

Try not to plan any social gatherings where alcohol will be an expected, if unwanted, guest. Research new, sober activities you can do together. Consider yoga, cycling, or something in the great outdoors.

5. Seek Support for Yourself

You know the old adage: you can't help others before you help yourself. Did you know there are support groups out there for those who love and live with a recovering addict?

Consider Al-Anon or Nar-Anon. You'll find others there who are seeking to understand the nature of addiction and be the best support they can be.

You might make a nice evening routine out of it. Your loved one can go to their AA meeting while you attend your Al-Anon meeting, and then you go out to share a cup of coffee together.

How to Support Someone: Patience

In the end, if you're truly wondering how to support someone, it all boils down to patience. Your loved one will be dealing with tremendous grief, regret, depression, and anxiety, on top of physical detriments.

But, it's not something anyone should ever have to do alone. So, know that your presence is highly valued and, dare we say, essential to their recovery.

Here at NBC29, we love to keep you up to date on all your local Charlottesville news. We've got you covered with everything weather, sports, community, and lifestyle-related. And, if you're going through this tough time with your loved one, we wish you tremendous success and triumph.

Fact Check: How Effective Are Drug Rehab Centers?

Did you know around 4.5 million people are addicted to opioids? If you're struggling, we can help.

Are you wondering about the rehabilitation success rate? Not to worry! In this guide, we’ll go over the rehab success rate.

Want to learn more? Keep reading to find out.

Treatment Centers

Inpatient treatment is around one month long. The patient will undergo counseling and have a rigorous medication schedule.

If you head to a residential treatment center, the focus will be on changing your lifestyle. This stay can last up for two months. These programs also use peer counselors alongside medical staff.

Medical detox uses medication to help a patient transition from drugs. This treatment can last up to 10 months.

At an outpatient program, you still live at home but attend counseling sessions. These sessions will teach you how to combat cravings. You'll also learn more about addiction.

Is Drug Treatment Effective?

You can measure the success rate of a program by looking at different factors. For example, has there been a reduced drug use?

Are you using a substance less or in smaller amounts? Do you have a more extended period between relapses?

Some people see improvements at work. They report that they are getting more involved in their training. Students will state they are getting better grades at school.

Measure a treatment’s efficacy by noting how your relationships have improved. You may have fewer hospitalizations and visits with the doctor.

Track your mental health. Your mood may have elevated since seeking treatment. All these factors can affect your quality of life.

Statistics on Drug Treatment

There are around 22 million Americans who are in recovery from addictions. This is an estimate. The federal government doesn’t keep track of recovery like they would with addiction.

Over three-quarters of individuals will relapse within one year of treatment. Researchers estimate that around two-thirds of patients will relapse within weeks of treatment. You need a long-term plan for preventing relapse.

These numbers might seem lower and appear that treatment doesn’t work. But we know that addiction is a chronic disease and relapses are normal.

You can compare these numbers to asthma and Type I diabetes that both have high relapse rates.

Remember that addiction is a chronic disease. The success rate doesn’t depend on total sobriety but also on how it improves your life.

If a relapse occurs, people see that as a failure. With addiction, successful treatment includes constant evaluation and modification for the patient. Over time, you will learn what triggers can affect you.

With your team of medical professionals, you can make a treatment plan. Check out a drug rehab near where you live.

Now You Know the Rehabilitation Success Rate

We hope you found this guide on rehab helpful. Now that you know the rehabilitation success rate call a professional today for help.

8 Reasons You Should Avoid Using Expired Medication

It's 2 am and you're awake with a splitting headache. You stumble into the bathroom and pull out a bottle of Ibuprofen only to see that it's expired. The question is, do you take it and risk the potential dangers?

After all, is expired medicine really any danger?

We are here to argue that it is.

Just like foods, medications have a shelf life. When it comes to your health and safety, consuming expired medicines is simply not worth the risk. Here are 8 compelling reasons you and your loved ones should never take expired medication.

1. Decreased Potency

Just like with some foods, over time, medicine loses its potency. When you're suffering from pains or aches, and the normal dosage recommended on the bottle isn't working, it's probably because the expired medicine isn't as strong or "potent" as it once was.

This is more than just frustrating when you're trying to get relief. It can be potentially dangerous or even life-threatening if it leads to users taking more than the recommended dosage just to get the medicine to "work."

2. Decreased Safety

This may seem like an obvious and potentially broad reason, but it has to be listed. Simply stated, consuming expired medicine just isn't safe.

You don't know what state old medicine is in. You're less likely to know how it's been stored or in what conditions it's been stored in for the last few months or years.

This increases the likelihood of it's being exposed to unfit temperatures or moisture levels. All of which, can make medicine risky to your health if taken.

3. Bacterial Growth

Interestingly, the FDA lists bacterial growth on medicine as one of the many reasons you shouldn't keep it past its expiration date.

Some people may think that because most over-the-counter drugs are mainly chemical-based, they aren't susceptible to bacteria. That's where they'd be wrong.

Given the wrong temperature, storage conditions, moisture levels, or exposure to other chemicals, you can easily get bacteria growing on your medicines.

That's why, when it comes to expired medicine, your motto should be, "When in doubt, throw it out."

4. Less Risk of Accidental Overdose

Accidental overdose and even intentional overdose can occur when you hold onto medicine too long. Even if your prescription hasn't expired, but your need for it (as recommended by your doctor), has ended, an overdose is a serious risk.

Tens of thousands of Americans die every year from opioid overdoses. Holding on to expired or unneeded medicines is one of the greatest risk factors.

For the safety of you and your family, dispose of medicines after you no longer need them. Especially in the case of prescriptions and opioids.

Expired or unneeded medicines can be a temptation or interest to children or others. Don't risk a tragedy. Instead, learn appropriate ways to dispose of medications and always refill your prescription on time.

5. Less Risk of Abuse

Similar to overdose, abuse of prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs is far more likely when they are kept too long. Sometimes abuse can start because expired medicine no longer works as well as it should.

As mentioned, this can lead to users taking more doses than they should because they are trying to get the full effect. Over time, this can create a dependency and lead to abuse of the drug.

6. Less Risk of Antibiotic Resistance

You've probably been told by a doctor to always finish out your antibiotic prescription, even if you start feeling better before the medicine is gone. This is because antibiotics are unique.

If you stop taking your prescription early, your body will not be able to completely defeat its infection. This can lead to a more serious problem called "antibiotic resistance."

Antibiotic resistance means that infections in your body are no longer curred by taking antibiotics. Your body has become immune to the medicine. As you can imagine, this can become a very serious issue and risk to your health.

7. Outdated Recall Info

Unfortunately, while medicines should undergo FDA approval before being prescribed or sold in pharmacies, sometimes problems occur down the road.

On occasion, issues or unforeseen side effects can lead to a medication being recalled. If you're holding onto medicine for months or years, you may be unaware of recalls.

Not only could your medicine be degrading, developing bacteria, or losing its potency, but it could be recalled on top of all this. The last thing you want for you or your loved ones is to unintentionally administer harm instead of help.

8. Degradation

Perhaps one of the scariest potential dangers of consuming expired medications (besides the risk of death or overdose), is the degradation of drugs. Just like food, over time, the chemical compounds used to create medicines degrade.

Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to unintended side-effects when the medications are taken long past their expiration dates.

As chemicals degrade, changes in the medicine makeup and effects on users can take place. Best not to risk unforeseen side-effects or harm by taking medications that have begun to chemically break down.

Storing Your Medicine

The reasons to throw out expired medicine are many. Keep your medicine fresh longer by carefully reading and following storage directions. Some medicine must be kept in the refrigerator.

Others simply require a cool, dry place. Ironically, the bathroom cabinet may not always be the best place to store medicines. Bathrooms tend to become humid during showers. Humidity can lead to bacterial growth and degradation.

It may be wise to store your medicines according to their expiration date. This will help you more easily keep track of when to throw certain medicines out.

A dresser drawer, out of reach of children, or a high hall closet shelf may be dry, temperate options for safe storage.

How to Throw Out Expired Medicine

Simply throwing expired medicine into the garbage is not the safest way to get rid of it. Some medicines, particularly opioids, have unique requirements for safe disposal.

If you're unsure how to safely throw medicine out, contact your physician. For more healthy tips and hacks, browse our blog.

Reasons Why Sleeping Is Important for Your Health

From the time that we are born, we often hear about the importance of getting eight hours of sleep without fail. Sadly, meeting deadlines and trying to make more money or just spending time on social media has made this vital step for life sustenance a tad less important for most of us.

There are many reasons why you should instantly make sure that you get at least 6 to 7 hours of sleep every single day to remain healthy. Read on as we discuss the top reasons why you should immediately make changes to your daily schedule to make sure you get more sleep.

Health Benefits of Sleeping #1: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Help Reduce Stress

Lack of sleep can often put your body in a state of stress. Also, in the world we live in today, stress has become quite a common health issue. When you don’t get enough sleep, not only do the body's functions not do their job, but your blood pressure and the secretion of stress hormones will also go into overdrive.

High blood pressure can increase your risk of suffering from a heart attack and stroke whereas, stress hormones can make falling asleep difficult. So, make sure that you have a comfortable bed complete with a firm mattress and comfortable pillows to keep your stress levels in check.

Health Benefits of Sleeping #2: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Maintain Your Physical Health

One of the main reasons why getting eight hours of sleep is important for life sustenance is because it can regulate the entire functioning of our physical wellbeing. This, of course, is in addition to mental health too.

Your blood sugar levels, immune cells, and even heart health can be effectively maintained when you sleep properly. In addition to all this, sleep can make you feel well-rested. Not only will this help to increase your productivity at work, but it will also help you function in an effective manner throughout the entire day. You will take less time to complete basic tasks while simultaneously decreasing the probability of committing errors.

If you entertain guests frequently, don’t forget to look out for them as well. If you don’t have a guest room, you can always use a sleeper sofa to help them sleep better.

Health Benefits of Sleeping #3: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Make You More Alert

You must already be aware of how working becomes easier when you feel active and full of energy. But, if you are lethargic or drowsy, productivity will, of course, be negatively impacted.

Make sure that you sleep well to feel alert and energized the next day. Try to put your entire day to good use by being active and doing productive tasks that make you feel accomplished and slightly tired so that you can enjoy a night of deep sleep.

Health Benefits of Sleeping #4: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Improve Your Chances of Reducing Weight

A piece of research conducted by experts found out that people who didn’t sleep adequately per night were more likely to be obese or overweight. As per experts, a lack of sleep can negatively affect your hormonal balance that, in turn, negatively affects your appetite.

Not sleeping enough can alter the production of appetite hormones, leptin and ghrelin. So yes, it’s imperative that you ascertain that you are getting adequate sleep regularly if you want to keep an active check on your weight.

Health Benefits of Sleeping #5: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Promote the Healing of Your Body

Naptime is the perfect time to relax. But, it’s also the time when our body starts to repair any damage that might have been caused due to harmful exposure to UV rays, stress, or injury. You see, our cells start to produce more protein while we are asleep. We require these protein molecules to facilitate the building blocks for cells that can help to repair any damage caused.

Health Benefits of Sleeping #6: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Boost Your Memory

Our mind is interesting enough in terms of its makeup but what makes it unique is its processing. When you are sleeping, your mind starts to work to strengthen your memories or consolidates any skills that you might have learned while you are awake.

As per Dr. David Rapoport, an associate professor at NYU Langone Medical Center, “If you are trying to learn something, whether it’s physical or mental, you learn it to a certain point with practice. But, something happens while you sleep that makes you learn it better.“

Health Benefits of Sleeping #7: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Help Curb Inflammation

Suffering from inflammation to your joints and the surrounding tissues has become a common health condition that many people are suffering from. Thankfully, getting a proper night's sleep can be really beneficial for chronic pain and arthritis patients.

As mentioned before, lack of sleep can increase the production of stress hormones in the body, which can increase inflammation. This is most certainly something that you do not want to happen. Inflammation can cause deterioration as we grow older by increasing our risks of suffering from heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, and other health conditions.

Health Benefits of Sleeping #8: Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Will Lower Depression Levels

Having an adequate amount of sleep will make you feel happier and refreshed while simultaneously reducing irritability.

According to Dr. Raymonde Jean, MD, director of sleep medicine and associate director of critical care at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, "Lack of sleep can contribute to depression. A good night’s sleep can really help a moody person decrease anxiety. You get more emotional stability with good sleep."

Doctors even advise against the concept of making up for lost sleep during the weekends. "If you sleep more on the weekends, you simply aren’t sleeping enough in the week. It’s all about finding a balance," adds Dr. Rapoport.

A Charming Smile: Is Fluoride Therapy Right for You? Many dentists will recommend that their patients have a fluoride treatment at least once a year, but is this right for you and your teeth? The answer depends on a few different variables, including where you live, what brand of toothpaste you use and what condition your teeth are currently in.

However, your dentist is the one who can best decide what treatments for your teeth will be beneficial and which ones you should skip. It is important to discuss all your concerns with your dentist at the beginning of each appointment.

Recommendations from the American Dental Association or ADA is for a fluoride treatment at different intervals depending on how badly your teeth need fluoride. Recommendations range from every three months, six months and once a year.

You are at risk for cavities if any of the following apply to you:

  • Weak enamel
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Lack of consistent dental care
  • Excessive street drug abuse
  • Poor diet, mostly sweets, no vegetables, and most processed foods
  • Eating disorders

Benefits of a Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride creates a stronger outer covering of your teeth. It does not remove tooth decay. Fluoride will also lessen the likelihood of developing cavities from certain foods and neglected oral care.

The important minerals on the tooth's surface can be restored with a fluoride therapy treatment. The amount of fluoride will depend on how much fluoride you have already gotten through different avenues in your daily life.

Fluoride is found in the following edibles:

  • Water
  • Tea
  • Infant formula
  • Fish eaten with the bones
  • Foods, like pasta, rice, and vegetables cooked in water

Children and Fluoride

The earlier children are exposed to and begin using fluoride, the better their teeth will be protected from cavities. As a replacement for juice, which will definitely contribute to cavities as well as weight gain, water is ideal. Kids as young as three-years-old should be using fluoride toothpaste, although the amount should be extremely small. They will also be getting fluoride from the water they drink.

Giving younger children, even those under one-year-old, water is the best way to have them obtain fluoride. You will need to check with your pediatrician to make sure water from the tap is safe for your infant. You may be able to purchase bottled water with fluoride if you live in an area where the water is not safe for your baby.

Risks of Fluoride

Too much fluoride can cause a number of health problems, some more harmful than others. Your dentist will be able to determine if you have had too much fluoride with a simple test.

The dangers of too much fluoride include:

  • Thyroid issues
  • Skin issues, including acne and eczema
  • Neurological issues
  • Low fertility and other reproductive issues
  • High blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues
  • Bone issues
  • And many other illnesses

It is best to discuss your diet and drinking habits with your dentist before agreeing to a fluoride therapy treatment. You will find him or her knowledgeable about how much fluoride is good for you and when the best time to apply it again.

4 Tips for Picking the Most Suitable Medication Cart for Your Healthcare Facility The purpose of a medication cart is to provide a safe and secure storage option for your medications and portability is another important feature as nurses and medical need to be able to move them around between patients and wards with the minimum of fuss.

When it comes to medication carts for nursing homes, for example, you want to ensure that only authorized users have access to the prescribed medications and another key feature is likely to be a robust and reliable security system to keep the medications secure.

There are many varieties of medication carts available and you need to consider a few key points in order to determine which model is best for your needs.

Working out what you need from your medication cart

A top priority would be to perform a comprehensive assessment of the proposed healthcare environment where you will be using the medication cart.

Take the time to look at your existing workflows and make a list of what you need and what you need to improve on.

Talk to all the medical staff who will be using the cart so that you can find a solution that helps them to do their job more effectively and efficiently.

Also, bear in mind that there are many different types of medical carts available and there is a clear distinction between a medication cart and one that is focused on supporting a surgical room.

Assessing your needs and the environment where you will be using the medication cart should help you to choose the right one.

Consider the battery system

You don’t want to interrupt the flow of medical supplies because the cart battery has run down and needs recharging.

If you are going to be putting the cart through its paces and it can’t afford any potential downtime you might want to look for a system where you can swap batteries over without having to cut power to the onboard computer.

Think about the structure of your medication cart

It is highly relevant to consider that the medication cart you choose will be pushed around by staff members for chunks of the day and if the cart is heavy and not very maneuverable it will soon have a negative impact.

One option might be to consider an aluminum medication cart, which is lightweight, and ask about the design of the cart to verify that it performs well whether it is going backward, forward, or sideways.

Good security

Medications have a value and can be dangerous in the wrong hands which is why you need to think carefully about cart security.

Check that the medication cart you are considering has all the right locking features and security protocols in place that only allow access to authorized personnel.

You will probably have a choice of using an access code or a proximity card to open the drawers, with proximity cards often the preferred option in busy facilities.

These are some of the important considerations that you need to run through when evaluating the suitability of a medication cart and it pays to get your choice right when you consider how often you will be using this important piece of medical equipment.

5 Healthy Pre Workout Foods to Eat

Health experts suggest eating a meal two to three hours for a workout to get the best results. However, you shouldn't take that as an excuse to break into a bag of chips or indulge with some ice cream.

Instead, you'll want to focus on snacks that have a track record of helping before a workout.

Need some inspiration? Then keep reading as we outline five of the best healthy pre workout meals.

1. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is one of life's simple pleasures. It's delicious on its own, it goes well with almost everything, and it's chock full of proteins and healthy fats.

A serving of peanut butter contains about 191 calories and nets 7 grams of protein according to USDA guidelines.

For an extra nutritional boost, grab organic peanut butter or powdered peanut butter, which tends to have less sugar and fewer calories respectively.

2. Nuts

As great as peanut butter is, it isn't always super filling. If you're looking to avoid workout hunger pangs, you'll want to stock up on tree nuts.

You can find the following at your local grocery store:

  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Brazil nuts
  • Macadamia nuts

Like peanut butter, nuts are high in healthy fats and proteins, so you'll stay fuller for longer.

3. Banana

Bananas are a great source of potassium making them an excellent snack for runners looking to avoid shin splints. As if that wasn't reason enough to pick up a bunch, potassium also aids cardiovascular health so you can maintain breath control.

Plus, if nothing else, they contain the fewest calories out of any snack on this list. A typical banana contains only around 100 calories.

4. Oatmeal

We already know what you're thinking. On its own, oatmeal isn't the most exciting snack in the world. If anything, it's rather bland.

However, there's a reason why so many athletes love it. Oatmeal contains antioxidants, vitamin B, and almost as much protein as peanut butter.

And while it isn't anything exciting on its own, a bowl of oatmeal is like a blank canvas. You can add tons of healthy treats to give it a rich flavor, including protein powders like C4 Pre-workout or PB2, which is powdered peanut butter.

5. Dark Chocolate

Sweet tooths of the world unite! There's finally a pre-workout food that's as beneficial as it is delicious.

While you'll still need to moderate the amount of chocolate in your diet, feel free to munch and crunch on a few pieces of dark chocolate.

Why dark chocolate over milk chocolate? For starters, dark chocolate contains more caffeine, which, when ingested a half hour or so before a workout, can give you the energy you need to get off the couch and into the gym. It also aids with post-workout muscle recovery, so you'll get leaner faster!

Healthy Pre Workout Meals to Keep You Going

These healthy pre workout meals may not seem like much, but trust us, they'll give you the energy you need to conquer your workout. So give them a try.

And don't be afraid to mix and match. Some combinations, like peanut butter and banana or oatmeal and dark chocolate, can give you even more energy!

When you're done with your workout, make sure to check back with our blog, where we post tons of helpful content like this.

7 Common Breathing Disorders (And How to Prevent Them)

You're going to the doctor about a cold you've been having. It's your first time seeing this doctor so you're given a clipboard of information to fill out. One of the things that they are looking for is your family's medical history.

There are a ton of things listed such as asthma, lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, and a lot of other common breathing disorders. How much do you know about these diseases? How much do you know about your respiratory system in general?

If your answer is, not much, we're here to fill you in. Here are a few common respiratory disorders and what you can do about them.

1. Asthma

Asthma is a reversible upper respiratory disease that's caused by inflamed airways. Most of the time this disorder will make itself known when you're still a child and continue on throughout your adult life. There are some who don't develop it until their adulthood, however.

Symptoms of this disease are chest tightness, wheezing, dry cough, and shortness of breath. In terms of how to treat it, anti-inflammatory medications will give you a bit of relief.

You should also carry around your inhaler everywhere you go. Asthma attacks are triggered by common allergens so you never know when you'll need it.

Features of facial fillers from Rediesse The beauty industry can offer different products that can rejuvenate and improve skin condition. One of such products is Radiesse. It’s a product that is used to treat specific areas of the patient’s face and hands to erase wrinkles, fine lines, to plump up the skin and to restore the cheek volume.

It’s not a surgical treatment, it has a temporary though long-lasting effects. The procedure is safe since  it is not invasive, especially in comparison with plastic surgeries. The product has a reasonable price (you can check the price here - company euromexde.com) and it is praised by patients.

How does it work?

Rediesse is a facial filler that can quickly plump up the patient’s skin and to reduce wrinkles. It is different from other similar skin fillers since it triggers the process of restoring natural collagen beneath the skin. It is considered to be one of the best facial filler products due to several factors, one of them is the durability of the effect.

It is one of the best choices when it comes to choosing dermal fillers. It is mostly used to erase wrinkles in the nasolabial area, as well as other wrinkles on the face and even hands. It is a great choice to fill in the areas where the fat was lost. Since this substance triggers the process of restoring natural collagen, it grants a far longer effect. While hyaluronic acid is working, the collagen is refilling.

The most important features

This product has several most important characteristics:

  • It is used to restore lost fat areas on the patient's face and hands.
  • Erases wrinkles around nose and lips, on the forehead, restores cheek volume.
  • Used to rejuvenate the skin of patients who are older than 35 years but younger than 60.
  • It is non-toxic but it is advised to use it with caution.
  • Side effects are possible (swelling, itching, redness, etc.).
  • The patient can go home right after the procedure is done. It is so simple that the doctor can do it in his office.
  • The procedure won’t last longer than fifteen minutes.
  • Patients can return to their usual routine almost immediately. But it is advised to minimize dynamic activities (i.e., in the gym) during the next 24 hours after the procedure was done.
  • The results are immediate.

It’s difficult to estimate the cost of the procedure since the consultation from the doctor is needed. It depends on the patient’s age, skin condition, and other similar factors. Some patients report that the usage of Radiesse injections wasn’t needed for about two years after the first injection was done.

The procedure

As it was mentioned, the product is non-toxic and allergic tests are rarely needed. The doctor can complete the procedure in his office after using local anesthesia. Most of the time after the anesthesia is applied, patients don’t feel any pain or discomfort. But in some cases, patients might experience slight pain. The injection is used with Lidocaine that have can reduce the pain.

The doctor decides the places of the injection. Then he uses the anesthesia in all those areas where the Radiesse will be used. Then he finally completes the injections of the product. Such a procedure won’t take longer than fifteen minutes. Patients don’t have to stay in the office for some recovery procedures since the treatment is light and doesn’t require recovery. You can buy dermal fillers Radiesse here.

Side effects

Side effects are rare and include:

  • Slight swelling.
  • Itching in the injection areas.
  • Slight pain.
  • Redness.
  • Bruising in the  injection areas.

It is recommended to inform the doctor if you are allergy-prone so he can adjust the dose.

What can Thai Massage do for me? A client recently asked me after a Thai massage session, "what exactly were you doing?" Good question! I answered her as best I could in the moment, but it also got me thinking more deeply about what Thai massage does offer and how it works on many levels, including the physical, but also the energetic. For those who do not know, Thai Massage is an ancient form of bodywork with roots in the Ayurvedic tradition. It is traditionally done with clothes on on a mat on the floor and includes stretching, acupressure, and massage. Today I want to talk in a bit more depth about how Thai Massage works with what we call The Winds, or Vayus of the body as well as the Sen lines.

Thai massage's goal is simply to support the body in finding balance and returning to homeostasis, or how it is supposed to function. A simple goal, but with potentially profound, and multilevel implications. What happens when not only muscular tension is released, but memories, experiences, and emotions being held in our bodies also are released? What happens when places where energy wasn't flowing well starts to flow more freely? Perhaps we suddenly sleep better, or think clearer, or perhaps a pain or ailment in a completely different part of the body heals itself. The body is a strange and often mysterious thing, but it is all interconnected.

The winds, or Vayus, as they are called, are a way to more deeply understand Prana, or life force. There are five winds: Apana, Udana, Samana, Vyana, and then Prana. Through the movements of Thai massage we work with all five, perhaps emphasizing one more than another for a particular client to help bring them all into balance.

Prana Vayu's energy is inwards and upwards, and particularly supports our brain and our senses, including that of our third eye. Apana Vayu is down and out, nourishing the digestive system and organs. Udana Vayu has a circular upwards motion and supports our ability to express ourselves. Samana Vayu is an energy of contraction in, the exhale that helps us integrate all that we take in, whether that be food, emotions, or experiences. Lastly, we have Vyana Vayu, the energy of expansion out, supporting particularly our heart, lungs and circulation, as it supports the other Vayus.

In simple terms, these energies can be stimulated and supported by the movements of up, down, in, and out, through the inhale and exhale that occurs in our breath but also throughout our whole body's expansion and contraction through different movements.  As I give a Thai massage I am looking for where one of these winds may not be flowing freely, and looking to assist them so they can assist you to feel your best.

Along with the Vayu's I am also paying attention to the Sen lines. Sen lines are the Ayurvedic version of meridian lines. There are thousands of them, 72,000 to be exact, but in the Thai bodywork I do I focus primarily on 6 major lines. These lines do not necessarily follow a linear path, and to explain where they go along the whole body would be tricky, but the sole of a foot can be used to explore them all in relatively simple terms. While each line has connections to the physical body, such as particular organs it is supposed to support, each line also has a more esoteric meaning and connection to something beyond the physical.

Sen Kalathari is often called the psychic, or emotional line. On the bottom of your foot, it is like rays of a sun, rising over a horizon, extending from the center of of your heel out to each toe. Working this line can help to move stuck emotions.

Sen Sumana is the line my teacher says connects us to source. It is beyond psychic. One could say it connects us to the cosmos. This line begins at the soles of our feet, running along the inner edge from heel to big toe. This line also runs through all our major chakras, up the center of our core, though our 3rd eye, and out our crown.

The next two lines are often thought of as a pair: Sen Ittha (left side of the body) and Sen Pingkhala (right side of the body). They are connected to the male and female energies within us all, with Ittha, on the left being the feminine; receptive, and cooling in its qualities, and Pingkala, on the right, being the masculine; with an energy of heating and rising. On the feet, these lines runs along the outside of your sole, from the heel to the pinky toe, on the left foot and right foot respectively.

Lastly we have another pair of lines, Sen Sahatsarangski (left) and Sen Thawari (right). These lines are said to have a stabilizing earth energy to them, and support our bones and the structure of our body. On the sole of the foot, if Kalathari was the rays of the rising sun extending out to each toe, Sahatsarangski and Thawari are the line that create the horizon, creating a gentle arc on your heel.

As I move up and down your body, I am putting pressure and massaging along these lines, helping energy to flow smoothly, once again so that your body can heal itself and bring itself into balance. I may pause for a while on what is called a marma point, the Ayurvedic version of acupressure points, or places where the energy may tend to pool or stagnate, helping to get the energy to flow.

If this all sounds like a lot, I understand. It did to me as well. And honestly, I am very much still deepening my knowledge of this complex and ancient system, but even with my limited knowledge I can say that there is definitely a power and wisdom to working the lines and using the winds. My own personal experiences with having someone work the lines on me was to feel more clear headed and energized, and to even have the whites of my eyes become clearer over the next couple days. And I have seen it do some amazing things for my clients as well.

Have you had an experience with myself or another Thai Massage practitioner where you felt a significant change or difference in how you felt after the work? Please share your experience in the comments below!

4 Scientific Reasons Why Vacations Are Important for Your Health

Traveling abroad is an amazing experience, and more and more people are realizing this. 21.4 million Americans currently hold passports. While this is by no means a huge percentage of the population, it is an all-time high for the US populous, so a new trend that inspires relaxation and health might be beginning!

Whether you plan a trip abroad or a domestic venture, traveling to new places is a must. Not only is going on a vacation a fun and exciting getaway, but it also has scientifically proven health benefits!

Read on to learn why vacations are important to both a person's mental and physical well-being.

1. They Decrease Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issues in the US, with 40 million adults struggling with them. Beyond those suffering from a diagnosable and treatable anxiety issue are those that suffer from the stress of everyday life. Between work, finances, and family, there are so many issues that arise every day.

Taking vacations is scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Those who take the time to relax and enjoy their lives will come back feeling refreshed and happier. This reduction of stress leads to less muscle tension and chronic sadness. In this way, taking a trip can improve your overall quality of life!

2. They Promote Better Sleep

Vacationing regularly has also been proven to promote better sleep. Those who take more frequent trips tend to have lower stress levels, so anxiety won't keep them up at night.

Speaking of sleep, look into booking hotel rooms before you head off on your trip. By getting a room before setting off, you'll save yourself the hassle and strife of finding a place when you could be sightseeing!

3. They Increase Creativity

Speaking of sightseeing, did you know that going to new places, interacting with locals, and trying out new customs and activities is scientifically proven to expand your mind?

This makes total sense- after all, you're expanding your sights beyond your bubble when you do this. These activities also make you look at problems in different and more creative ways than you would have before traveling. This can make you a more interesting person to talk to as well as a more productive employee at work!

4. They Prevent Heart Problems

In addition to a plethora of mental health benefits, traveling helps your physical health in many ways. One of the most significant parts of your body that it strengthens is your heart.

It's proven that taking frequent trips prevents a higher risk of heart disease and heart attack. Due to this, you're likely to live a longer and healthier life!

The Best Healthcare Brochure Ideas and Mistakes to Avoid

Creating a healthcare brochure may sound like a challenge. Click here to learn what should be on a brochure as well as mistakes to avoid.

The healthcare industry is seeing a slow but steady increase in revenue, with current data placing the industry's worth at $88 billion.

While it's a great time to be in the industry, you'll need to step up your advertising if you're looking to stand out. Brochures in doctor's offices or the mail are a quick, easy, and affordable way of spreading the word.

However, it's all too easy to make a mistake that renders your brochure ineffective.

Before you make a healthcare brochure for your business, make sure you learn what not to do. Keep reading to find out about some crucial mistakes you'll want to avoid.

Neglecting to Begin with the Most Important Info

The front of your brochure has to be eye-catching enough to convince readers to pick it up. While a great image is a good start, it's only the beginning.

Don't forget to include your brand's name along with contact information so people who like what they see can get in touch when they're finished reading.

A good rule of thumb is to style your brand name and contact info in a different color. That way, it stands out and doesn't clash with your background or any other text in your brochure.

Including Too Little or Too Much Information

Shopping for healthcare is difficult enough as it is. It's on consumers to parse through dozens of healthcare companies, each with several tiers of plans.

It can be overwhelming, to say the least.

One of your most important jobs is to provide a clear, thorough explanation of your brand and its offerings. By the time a reader finishes your brochure, they should have a clear picture of how your company is different from the competition, what plans they can choose from, and the advantages each tier offers.

It's a fine line to balance, but your readers will thank you.

Choosing a Poor Format

No one is going to bother reading through your information if your brochure looks like a mess.

Since brochures are small, finding the proper format can be tricky. We suggest using a customized brochure template, which you can find online so that you won't have to worry about dimensions and image fitting.

Forgetting a Call to Action

Let's say you've followed the above advice and your brochure looks great. You should have customers in the palm of your hand!

But you're not done quite yet. You still have one crucial element to include: an inspiring conclusion that makes readers want to contact you.

Always end your brochures with a call to action that encourages direct and specific action. Action phrases like "call now" or "get in touch today and let us answer your questions" or "sign up today" tell the user what to act and when to do so.

Avoid These Mistakes to Create a Great Healthcare Brochure Every Time

To summarize, let's look at what makes a good healthcare brochure.

It's clear and easy to read, with your brand's name, logo, and contact info front and center. It's also short, sweet, and to the point, while still providing enough information for consumers to make an informed decision. Finally, it includes a CTA that inspires direct action.

If you can check off every box on that list, you're golden!

The Benefits of CBD From high street health food shops to online retailers like Dayzed, CBD products are appearing more and more regularly and it might lead to wonder what all the hype’s about? Is it really a miracle cure all as some would have you believe? Or is it just a fad that’s soon going to pass by.

Today we’re taking a look at CBD and hoping to answer some of those questions.

Before we start, it’s important to note that the science of studying CBD is in its infancy: though its use as a folk remedy for a lot of different issues is almost as old civilisation, modern science has for a long time shunned it because it’s derived from the cannabis plant – a controlled substance in much of the world. Now, as it’s benefits become clearer and governments are more willing to acknowledge that CBD is distinct from the psychoactive THC compound that gives cannabis its high. This means that our understanding of the benefits of CBD oil are mainly derived from anecdotal data and preliminary studies. The medical establishment is happy that the compound is safe to be sold as an uncontrolled substance, but not to speak with authority on why you might want to take it.

Pain Control

One of the reasons many people take CBD products is to control pain. While it’s not a substitute for a pharmacy painkiller when you’re experiencing acute pain from an injury or illness, there is some evidence that CBD can help to reduce or manage chronic pain.

Certainly for those who prefer natural solutions, or want to supplement an already extensive prescribed pain relief programme with complimentary products, CBD is a significant weapon in the arsenal. Its effects aren’t guaranteed by the medical establishment and may be subtle, but to many they’re vital.

Mental Health

Conditions like depression and anxiety affect what appears to be an increasing number of people, and while there are lots of options for treatment, from talking therapies of various kinds to medication, some people look further afield for relief.

Some studies have shown that CBD interacts with your brain’s receptors for serotonin, which affects your mood, in a similar way to some anti-depressants. It lacks a lot of the side effects of chemical mood regulating drugs, and has the benefit of not being addictive. Again, while scientists aren’t able to speak authoritatively about its effects, a growing community of people are making CBD tea, oil, or vape juice a part of how they manage their mental health from day to day.

Say Namaste To Simple Yoga Insurance Comparisons

When you are looking for insurance for your yoga studio, you can find comparisons online that explain how much coverage you are getting. Your need coverage for your business, your building, and yourself. If you are hiring yoga teachers, you want to make certain that they have insurance that will protect them. Use the tips listed below to get the type of insurance you need most.

Compare As Many Policies As Possible

You can use an online yoga insurance comparison tool to see all the different companies that offer coverage for someone like a yoga instructor. You need coverage for yourself if you are teaching yoga, and you can get coverage for the teachers that work under you. The comparison tool charts show how much coverage costs, how much coverage you get, and any restrictions that may apply to the policy.

Read Reviews Of Each Company

Yoga insurance reviews tell you quite a lot about each company. You need to know if the company offers good customer service, and you should make sure that you have eliminated any companies that have scathing reviews written by angry or dissatisfied customers. Someone who did not like how an insurance agent talked to them is simply complaining. A customer who writes a review about how the company did not pay their claim is a completely different matter.

Check The Company’s Credit History

You can check the credit score of every insurance company on the market. When you search for the company’s credit score, you need to know if they are improving or declining. Some companies have been declining for quite a while, and that makes it hard for them to give you good prices. A company with a good or improving credit score can pass the savings along to you with no trouble.

Is There An Agent That Can Help You?

You should find an insurance company with agents that can help you. An agent, whether local or virtual, can help you write the appropriate policy, explain how much coverage you need, and help with policies that will protect your building or equipment.

Liability Insurance For Injuries

You may have angry students who claim that they were hurt as a result of your class or instruction. If this is the case, you can file a claim with your liability insurance provider. The insurance company will send a lawyer to help you, and the insurance company will pay for any damages that might be awarded to your angry student.

If someone is hurt inside your building, an insurance policy will pay damages to that individual. Plus, you need insurance that will pay for lost or stolen equipment, break-ins, and damage in the building. Your company does not have money set aside to pay for every problem that comes along, and that is why you need yoga insurance.

Set Your Deductible

You need to decide what your deductible will be for your insurance policy. If you are making quite a lot of money, you may choose a no-deductible policy because you can afford the monthly premiums. If you would like to save money every month, you can choose a higher deductible. Talk to your insurance agent about what they think is best for you and your business.

Conclusion

You must protect yourself when you are working with yoga students every day. You should protect yourself against any liability claims against you or the business. Plus, you need to insure your equipment and your building. Your business needs as much protection as you can afford, and you can compare policies online as you decide which insurance carrier you would like to use.

Help for Designers: A List of the Best Brochure Templates Despite being the age of digital advertising, the personal touch and exquisite design of a business brochure will never fully disappear.

The reason is that they are still effective at attracting your customer's attention, getting people to read its content, and sticky around longer than a web page.

But, there is a catch: the best brochure templates are needed to ensure that the aesthetics are high-quality and engaging.

If you are a designer, use these templates to make your graphics and layout perfect for the industry for which they serve.

Annual Report Layout

The best design suits the need of your client and their target audience. Annual appeals give constituents, board members, and the interested public a snap-shot of your achievements and future goals.

This will include many statistics in quantitative form, financial data, and qualitative anecdotes of success. This template uses easy-to-read infographics, charts, and photos to break up complex content.

Restaurant Menu

Yes, even restaurant menus are brochure styles that need top-notch design skills. A takeout menu can sit in someone's kitchen for years. Making a good one can encourage customers to try new food and come back for more.

Food templates should be simple with professional culinary photos that look delicious and represent the realistic image of the menu.

You will also want to include the restaurant's cooking philosophy to showcase the value of the restaurant.

Fashion Catalog

You may think it is difficult to design a fashion catalog since most of the images are clothing and accessories. But, the best brochures think outside of the box.

This is your opportunity to get artistic by thinking high-fashion with a customized brochure. And most catalog offer at least a dozen pages, giving you room to add interesting graphics.

Text in this template style is limited to product descriptions, so the imagery is of great importance.

Newsletter Brochure

Newsletter templates remain more classic and editorial, so brochure inspiration may strike you in how to layout text and images in a unique way.

Be sure not to stray too much from the template as you will need to consider the viewer's perspective. Newsletter read like books so the content must be logically placed from left to right and up to down.

Business/Corporate Brochure

Sending a business brochure to a potential client is a great way to show your professionalism while offering a glimpse into your service.

Impress them right away with a stunning cover image, logo, and slogan so they know exactly who you are before opening the trifold.

Continue with simplistic brochure ideas inside the pamphlet. Alternating text and graphic images keep the eye moving from one section to the next. You want to offer just enough information without the client becoming bored.

Best Brochure Templates Include a Call to Action

The best brochure templates aren't just about pretty pictures. Their purpose is to attract business. Make sure all of your designs include a directive to your audience. They should visit, call, or go to the web site to get more information.

The Hourglass of Time: 6 Health Conditions That Tend to Develop as We Get Older Time is something we can never get back, no matter how hard we try. That’s why taking care of our bodies is essential, especially as we get older. But there are just some conditions that are inevitable no matter how hard we try. Here are six conditions that tend to develop as we age.

  1. Arthritis

The condition known as arthritis is the breakdown of the tissues inside the joints. This is why it is difficult to move around and why it hurts so much. The most common symptoms are pain, inflammation, weakness in the joint, and difficulty moving around.

The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (where the cartilage between joints breaks down) and rheumatoid arthritis (where the body’s immune system attacks the tissues in the joints and causes inflammation).

  1. Impairment of the Senses

Vision and hearing are usually the first senses to go. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be cared for: prescriptions glasses can help with vision and there are hearing aids designed to create a soothing environment. There are always new technologies being developed to assess the first signs of vision and hearing loss.

  1. Coronary Heart Disease

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in elderly people. Coronary heart disease is a result of the heart’s blood supply being blocked or interrupted by fatty substances in the valves and arteries.

Certain lifestyle choices can increase the risk of coronary heart disease, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity. Getting exercise, eating healthier and quitting smoking are all steps one can take to reduce one’s risk for this disease.

  1. Dementia

This is a progressive disorder that first appears like simple forgetfulness as we get older. However, dementia itself is more than just forgetting. There are problems in maintaining a conversation and finding the right words to use, forgetting where you are or what date it is, or having difficulty with judging distance.

  1. Asthma

Asthma can occur when the body becomes quite sensitive to certain allergens in the air and the airways become inflamed. They can become too narrow to the point that it become very difficult to breathe.

The most common symptoms of asthma include coughing, a tight sensation in the chest, and wheezing.

It’s important that you have some means of contacting someone if you start to experience regular asthma attacks so that you can receive medical attention immediately.

  1. Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition that becomes easier for older people to develop because of the changes that their bodies go through. It’s a lifelong condition that is caused by the pancreas losing the ability to produce insulin, which is used to process sugar.

Type 2 diabetes is also a growing problem, as it becomes more and more difficult for older people to eat healthier and stay active as their metabolisms start to deteriorate.

The Benefits of Restore Cryotherapy The Benefits of Cryotherapy to Your Body and Health.

Have you thought about doing cryotherapy, but you are not sure whether it is worth your time and resources? This article will help clear your doubts on the mater. Cryotherapy means cold therapy, and it involves ones’ body being exposed to freezing temperatures for some minutes. You have the option of either doing whole body cryotherapy or choosing a specific part of your body. If you choose the whole-body cold therapy, the specialist ensures they expose your entire body in a chamber containing extremely cold temperatures. The individual receiving the service is expected to undress and remain with the necessary clothing such as undergarments, gloves, and socks. This is because these pieces protect these sensitive areas. When in the cryo chamber, the body remains subject to the cold temperature for some minutes, except for the head. The head should remain at room temperature during the process. There are several benefits associated with this cold therapy which makes it popular. If your objective is to improve your overall health, cryotherapy is an option for you. Below are some of the benefits of cryotherapy.

Treats Anti-inflammatory Conditions.

Patients suffering from inflammation tend to benefit a lot from the cold therapy. Individuals suffering from inflammation tend to deal with pain, impaired blood flow, among others. If you have psoriasis, which is usually caused by overstimulated growth of skin cells, you will realize that the therapy minimizes the effects of psoriasis. While in the cryo chamber, the growth of skin cells slows down temporarily, and this allows the body to entirely transport the blood and oxygen to all parts of the body. This is done in an attempt to keep the body warm. Since the growth of cells is minimized, after the cold therapy, the cell growth is restored to normal levels. This reduces the inflammation symptoms and makes you feel more confident in your skin. When the body is exposed to cold temperatures, apart from it reducing the inflammation, it also triggers the production of immune cells. Some immune cells are natural killers, & are great when released because they aid in fighting against bacteria, virus and even, cancer cells.

Anxiety And Depression.

Once the cold air is released in the cryo chamber, your brain tends to release more than the normal amount of endorphins, together with other feel-good hormones. The effect of increase endorphins in the body is that the client has a better mood and more energy, which occurs as a result of the increased adrenaline levels. Patients who regularly engage in cryotherapy report a decrease in depression and anxiety. They also confess to having happier days. Note that cold therapy also helps to numb pain, a reason most patients tend to feel more comfortable and more joyful after the session. The cold temperature does this by numbing the irritated part of the body.

Weight Loss.

If you are interested in shedding off some pounds, cold therapy is a remedy. The cold temperatures and norepinephrine trigger the formation of brown fats in the body. These brown fats tend to contain a lot of mitochondria which are responsible for providing energy in the cells. Presence of a lot of mitochondria causes your body to produce and consume a lot of energy. This results in your body having a faster metabolism. A quicker metabolism causes your body to burn fats faster, causing weight loss. Also, the release of a lot of energy by the mitochondria allows individuals to have more energy to engage in exercises which are crucial for maintaining a healthy body.

Cryotherapy is an excellent treatment method. It comes with many benefits ranging from reducing anxiety and depression to minimizing body inflammation and pain. Ensure you talk with your doctor to see whether you are fit to engage in cold therapy.
