Give Your Skin a Lasting Glow With These Healthy Food Choices

It’s so easy to forget that what you put into your body plays a huge part in how your body feels and how well it performs!

When you get caught up in day-to-day happenings, you’re likely to lose sight of the importance of watching what you eat. You start to focus on eating to sustain you throughout the day instead of eating to keep your body healthy.

Eventually, you’ll start to feel tired and worn out, and also look pale and undernourished. If you’re at that stage right now, it’s important to make a conscious effort to assess what you’re feeding your body. This is the first step for reviving your appearance and overall health.

In getting started, look at what you can include as well as what you can eliminate from your diet to help you get and maintain glowing, healthy skin. A glowing exterior reflects a healthy interior!

These food-related decisions will help you achieve and maintain a healthy glow:

1. Drink lots of water. Water has several benefits to the body, but specifically related to that glow you want is its ability to flush toxins from your system and keep you hydrated.

  • Drinking 6-8 glasses of water each day will result in healthier, cleaner skin and a timeless natural glow.

2. Eat berries. Berries like raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Antioxidants play a huge part in helping to eliminate toxins from the body. As you may know, toxins are dangerous and contribute to all sorts of negative symptoms, including tiredness, weakened immune system, and even tainted blood.

  • All of the above symptoms can manifest themselves very easily. You’ll be able to look in the mirror and know something’s wrong.

3. Avoid processed foods. In lots of cases, processed foods contain ingredients that the human body just doesn’t know what to do with. When you eat them, the body just holds on to what it can’t process. In such cases, you really don’t know what kind of impact those ingredients are having on your system.

  • Play it safe by avoiding processed foods as much as possible. They may very well be contributing to the missing glow.
  • Shop at the whole foods stores in your area and have organic foods where possible.

4. Include fiber each day. Fibrous foods are effective at aiding digestion and allowing the body to get rid of free radicals that can wreak havoc on your system.

  • When you eat foods high in fiber, like grains and green vegetables, your strengthened health is reflected in your skin, too.
  • Whole grains can be found in some breakfast cereals, but be sure to check the sugar content so you’re not diminishing the value of the grains.
  • Broccoli is a particularly effective fibrous vegetable.

As you can see, it’s really not that difficult to treat your body right. By making just a few changes to what you eat, you’ll enable your body to function well and your skin to maintain a healthy glow.

When changing your diet, it’s easier if you implement just one change at a time. Once that change becomes a habit, you can make another change. Your skin will show the results in no time!

6 Crucial Inner Changes That Lead to the Outer Changes You Desire There’s little you can control in the world. Other people, the stock market, weather, or the price of tea in China are all outside of your influence. Fortunately, you can control yourself, and that’s all you need to control. Changing your inner world can lead to all the changes you wish to see in your life.

It can be hard to believe that changing your thoughts or attitude can make you healthy, wealthy, and wise, but making inner changes can have dramatic effects on every part of your life.

Enhance your life by making these internal changes:

How you view failure. Do you view failure as an embarrassment? Is it something you should avoid at all costs?

  • What if you viewed failure as simply a step along the way to success? Failure just means that the approach you used didn’t work. It’s an opportunity to re-tool your process and try again. If you keep learning and making improvements, how can you possibly fail in the long-term?
  • The way you view failure is a big part of whether or not you’ll be a successful person. How do you view failure? What view of failure would be useful to you?

Values. Suppose someone valued charity, kindness, and modesty. What type of life would they lead? Suppose someone else valued freedom, adventure, and courage. Now, suppose a third person valued money, power, and greed. It’s easy to see how these three people would lead very different lives.

  • What are your values? Do they support the life you want to live? Or, is your life in line with your values?

Beliefs. Beliefs color how you view the world and make decisions. If you believe that money is the root of all evil, that can certainly derail any efforts to amass wealth. If you believe that you’re just not good with people, your social life will suffer.

  • List some of your beliefs about money, yourself, and life in general. How are those beliefs helping or hurting you? What beliefs would be helpful for you to manifest and enjoy the life you desire?

Attitude. Do you expect things to work out for you, or are you primarily pessimistic? You’ll be less likely to try to do something if you have negative expectations. A positive attitude can help with your patience and ability to persevere when things aren’t going well.

  • Consider how your attitude is impacting the results you’re generating in your life.

Gratitude. Giving yourself a reminder of what is already working in your life can positively impact your attitude and expectations. It can also reduce anxiety and alter your perspective.

  • Take a few minutes in the morning and at night to mentally list the things that make you feel grateful. You can come up with a long list if you really think about it.

Thoughts. Our thoughts are under our control, though it might not seem that way. It’s easy to prove this to yourself. You can choose to think about an ice cream cone or a green cow. You can think about anything you like.

  • It’s important to take control of your thoughts. If you’re predominately thinking about negative outcomes, you’re going to struggle.
  • Monitor your thinking and try to keep your thoughts positive.

Changing yourself internally can give you everything you desire on the outside. Without making inner changes, it’s extremely challenging to change your behavior. You’re constantly fighting yourself, but willpower is not enough in the long-term.

Inner changes can eliminate the need for willpower. Rather than battling yourself day after day, make the inner changes that will create the outer changes you desire.

Be Kind to Your Body: Make These Healthy Wardrobe Changes

Surprisingly, it’s very possible that the choices you make in your wardrobe are working against your good health.

Bear in mind that designers aren’t in the business of making clothing safe. They’re in the business of making them attractive to the consumer.

Making these wardrobe changes can eliminate health issues that your clothes may already be causing:

  1. Wear lower heeled shoes. As researchers delve further into the impact of high heeled shoes on physical health, more and more are concluding that they are indeed damaging to the lower back and feet over the long run. To avoid running into any issues with pains or other conditions, follow these tips:
  • If you must wear high heeled shoes, alternate with lower heels throughout the week.
  • If you do a lot of walking and standing each day, take a pair of flats with you just in case you start to feel weary.
  • Try to incorporate exercises that strengthen the back so you’re less prone to damage from high heeled shoes.
  1. Balance skirts and pants. For women especially, wearing pants all the time can result in a buildup of moisture, which in turn can encourage the growth of bacteria. In order to avoid putting yourself at risk of bacteria, alternate between pants and skirts or dresses during the week.
  • Wear pants only a few days for the week, or on days when you don’t expect to have an unusually long or arduous day at the office.
  • In the summer months, try to wear more skirts and dresses, and reserve pants for the cooler seasons.
  1. Wear breathable fabrics. In line with balancing pants and skirts is wearing breathable fabrics. Again, not allowing your body to access as much air as it needs can result in excess moisture. In some cases, that can lead to infection, and in other cases it can lead to body odor.
  • Your best bet is 100 percent cotton fabrics. A cotton blend often works well for air circulation also.
  • Try on the garment you’re considering and notice if it feels airy and cool or seems to keep any air from getting to your skin.
  1. Wear pantyhose less. Women are guiltier than men of making wardrobe choices for the sake of fashion. Such is the case for women who wear pantyhose. When worn frequently, pantyhose can cause poor blood circulation, which has its own set of side-effects, including:
  • Development of varicose veins due to continued pressure on the veins.
  • Pains in the legs when pantyhose are removed.
  • Swollen, sensitive legs.
  • Numbness and cramping in the legs, also known as "pins and needles.”

It’s a very nice feeling to be able to look stunning. You feel good about yourself and others notice how well put-together you are. But there also comes a time to consider your physical health and well-being.

Your wardrobe can make a big impact on your health. Keep these tips in mind when you’re getting dressed in the morning. When you shop for new clothes, make wise choices that support your good health. Your body will be glad you did!

7 signs you should not ignore after a traumatic experience Healthline defines a traumatic event as an occurrence that causes emotional, physical or psychological pain. Traumatic experiences impact everyone differently. An event that renders one person deeply depressed may have minimal influence on another victim. As unique individuals, we all process life utilizing coping mechanisms that we have at our disposal. That's why it is so important to know when you or a loved one needs help.

The most common events that frequently lead to trauma are accidents, physical assault, mental, physical or sexual abuse, child abandonment, the threat of violence, fires, terminal medical diagnosis, life-threatening scenarios, combat, prison, mugging, natural disaster, divorce or death of a loved one. Any person who has experienced one or more of these types of events should recognize the fact that they may need professional help.

Below are seven signs that should never be ignored. When these symptoms appear, it is time to get help.

  1. Upsetting memories or dreams about a traumatic event.

We all remember certain events in life that are intense. Recurring flashbacks or nightmares that cause anxiety or emotional distress are something altogether different than usual dreams and warrant extra attention.

These type of negative symptoms may show up a week, a month or years after the traumatic event occurred. Mayo Clinic defines post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a condition caused by witnessing or being involved in any trauma-inducing event.

While it is common to have a period of adjustment to overcome trauma, in some cases sufferers must reach out for help and get treatment to heal. A good rule of thumb is to get help if symptoms last for much longer than a month or two. Check out to get information about treatment.

  1. Drug or alocohol abuse

The use of drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism is well documented as a dangerous way that many people choose to forget about a terrifying or traumatic event. Unfortunately, instead of making the situation better, these types of activities typically complicate life even further. If you or a family member start drinking too much or experimenting with drugs after a traumatic incident, then it is time to get professional help.

  1. Ongoing and increased incidences of physical and emotional symptoms

Arousal symptoms are emotional and physical reactions that often change after experiencing a traumatic event in life. Many survivors find that they are jumpy or easily startled, feeling afraid more frequently than in the past, expecting danger at every turn.

Other notable behavior changes often associated with these types of disquieting occurrences are sleep disorders like insomnia, an inability to concentrate, angry outbursts, and irritability. Out of character aggression is another possible symptom.

  1. Depression and anxiety

The signs of depression are not a surprising reaction to terrifying life events. Withdrawing from activities that were once considered important and enjoyable is one obvious behavior that is often connected with depression. Victims are also likely to become less social, reluctant to talk on the phone or attend family events.

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America cites both physical and emotional reactions related to feelings of anxiety. Physically, a victim can experience a pounding heartbeat, hyperventilation, trembling or sweating. This type of fight or flight response can feel overwhelming. Gastrointestinal distress is also a common physical issue that arises as anxious feelings threaten victims. Panic attacks are blamed on anxiety and can be so debilitating and frightening that people believe they are having a heart attack or dying.

  1. Negative mood swings and thinking

Unprovoked mood swings can point to trouble. Otherwise confident and upbeat victims can suddenly slide into bouts of negativity, harboring contempt for others and for themselves. Mood swings often make it difficult to maintain important and close relationships with family members, friends, and coworkers.

Some victims report feeling numb. In situations like this, it is difficult to feel happiness or to enjoy comfort from the simple joys of life like eating favorite foods or taking a walk on a beautiful, sunny day.

  1. Suicidal warning signs

When anxiety and depression make life intolerable for victims, thoughts of suicide can become persistent. Knowing what to look for is crucial for saving a life. Warning signs are reckless behavior such as car racing, mood swings, inability to sleep, substance abuse, unexplained feelings of rage, depression, withdrawal from friends and family members, disinterest in activities once enjoyed, threats to commit suicide, and a sudden and unexplained calmness like they have no care in the world.

It is crucial to get some help if you have any thoughts of suicide or know someone who is at high risk as exemplified by the behaviors listed above. You should always take a person seriously when they threaten suicide. Suicide hotlines and professional mental health professionals offer solutions that can save a life.

  1. Changes in appetite

One definite indication that a victim is suffering is if they stop eating or start eating everything in sight. Depression often causes this type of lifestyle change. If you no longer care about taking the trouble to feed yourself, then there is no denying that there is a serious problem that must be addressed.

When a friend has suffered a traumatic event and then starts losing weight or gaining a lot of weight in the aftermath of the horrific occurrence, then it is time to reach out to help. Since it is impossible to know how serious the situation is, it is best to access professional help in such cases.

Traumatic events can change a life forever. That's why it is so important to be mindful of the symptoms that can appear when a victim is in trouble. Reaching out to a friend in need or knowing when you are personally in trouble yourself can save a life or minimize suffering.

7 reasons why a regular skin check up is a must Your skin is the largest organ of your body and is responsible for protecting all of your inner organs, including the lungs, the heart, the muscles, and even the blood. Therefore, it is important to take good care of it, which includes scheduling regular skin check-ups, in order to keep it strong and healthy.

A regular skin checkup is fairly quick and simple and provides at least 7 benefits, including:

  1. It Helps Detect Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a silent disease that can go unnoticed until it has reached its late stages, which can make it difficult to treat. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, approximately one out of five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime, with more than 70% of fatalities resulting from melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to participate in an annual skin exam for the early detection of skin cancer, which can ultimately help save your life. This is especially important if you have a history of cancer in your family.

Skin cancer occurs in people of all skin colours and can reveal itself in various ways, including scars, skin ulcers, and moles, such as with melanoma, on the face, back of the hands, legs, back, and other parts of the body. If left untreated, it can also eventually spread to the organs, including the brain, lungs, bones, and liver, as well as the lymph nodes, where it can become even more serious.

Regular skin care checkups by a skin care professional, such as The Family Skin Care Clinic at, can help keep your skin screened for cancer as well as identify any lifestyle habits that may be contributing to your risk of developing the disease, so you can take the proper precautions to help prevent it.

If during your skin examination, the specialist detects any cancerous growths, they can also provide the proper surgical methods needed to safely remove them before they spread.

  1. It Can Help Diagnose Nail and Hair Conditions

Many people are unaware, but regular skin checkups can also help diagnose and treat nail and hair conditions. Therefore, whether you have an issue with thinning hair, baldness, dry, itchy scalp, and more, a skin checkup may the best place to start.

  1. It Can Help Properly Identify Acne

If you have ever had to deal with acne, then you know there are many over the counter products that promise to clear up your skin, and quickly, but that don't actually work.

When you receive a skin checkup, the specialist can not only determine the exact type of acne you have, but they can also identify the factors that are contributing to your acne, including your lifestyle, skin type, and any environmental factors that may be worsening your condition. They can also prescribe a specific regimen based on these factors that can help clear your acne once and for all.

Furthermore, all too often people think they have acne, when they actually have rosacea, so they use over the counter acne medications to treat the condition, which can make it worse.

Rosacea causes bumps, blistering, and redness on the skin similar to acne, which causes many people to mistake it for acne and go about using the wrong treatment only to find that it makes their condition worse.

Though both conditions have similar symptoms, they require different treatments to clear them up. A regular skin checkup not only helps properly distinguish acne from rosacea so that you can receive the proper treatment, but it also enables you to stay on top of the condition so that you can continue to prevent it.

  1. It Can Help You Safely Remove Moles

Moles are generally harmless growths that appear on the skin; however, for some, they can be unsightly. Trying to remove moles yourself can cause excessive bleeding, which can be dangerous. Furthermore, sometimes moles are confused with warts, which are small, non-cancerous flesh-coloured growths, which can cause you to treat them with over the counter treatment that can irritate the growth.

Though most moles are typically harmless, if you have more than 50 moles, your moles have changed in appearance or size, or they are accompanied by soreness, it can be a sign of skin cancer.

A regular skin checkup can help properly distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous moles as well as warts and then provide the methods to safely remove them.

  1. It Can Help You Properly Identify Stasis Dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis, which presents itself as a blistered rash that occurs throughout the body, especially the legs, is often confused with an infection of the skin and is thus often treated with medications that thin the blood or antibiotics, which can be harmful.

A regular skin checkup can determine the exact cause of your reoccurring rash so that it can be treated safely and effectively from here on out.

  1. It Can Help You Properly Identify Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy is a rash that carries with it various symptoms, including itching, swelling, blisters, and redness, which can be irritating. It can also seem to clear up on its own, which can cause you to confuse it with just a simple rash. However, sometimes the rash will appear again even worse, if not properly treated.

A skin checkup can help properly identify your rash, which will enable you to receive the proper treatment, so you don't continue to experience discomfort.

  1. It Can Help You Properly Identify Your Skin Type

There are many different types of skin from sensitive skin to dry skin to oily skin; therefore, there is no one size fits all skin product. In fact, using products that are not specially formulated to treat your specific skin type can irritate your skin, which can lead to acne breakouts, skin rashes, and more, which can actually worsen your condition and breakdown your skin's barrier.

A regular skin checkup can help identify your skin's changes throughout your life-cycle, which will affect what skin care products you use for healthy, glowing skin.

In the end, a regular skin checkup can be used to help keep your skin happy and healthy in various ways, including detecting skin cancer early so that it can be prevented. During your skin checkup, your specialist may also recommend diet and lifestyle changes, which also helps promote healthy skin.

If you are experiencing any skin issues, especially if you have lesions that won't heal or a mole that has changed in appearance, it is imperative that you schedule a skin checkup immediately to help rule out skin cancer as a cause.

7 tips to stay calm and mindful throughout the day One of the true and simple facts of life is that some days are relaxing, but many days are stressful and difficult. For your mental health, and even your physical health, it is important to find ways to cope throughout the day.

Mindfulness is simply a mental state wherein you become aware of your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and anything else that may be going on within you. Practicing mindfulness creates a space for yourself where you can see beyond the external forces around you and focus more on what you can control.

Working on techniques and methods for calming yourself down can help with everyday stress and worry. Consider incorporating some or all of these tips to make your days go by more smoothly.

1 Establish Cues for Practicing Mindfulness

It is easy to get caught up in your own busy life and forget to practice mindfulness and calming techniques. Work, home life, personal relationships, and all of those unexpected events that pop up during the day use valuable space in your mind. It’s when you get caught up in all of this that it becomes particularly important to practice mindfulness.

Some people use regular, routine events to cue a mindful moment. This can be something trivial like brushing your teeth or walking to the restroom at work. Others prefer to use more stress-based cues to remind them to take a moment to calm down. This forces you to begin associating negative emotions with the need to be mindful, turning the negative moments into neutral ones at the least.

2 Practice Breathing Techniques

One of the most basic forms of mindfulness is regulated breathing exercises. Focusing on your breath helps in grounding yourself and connecting what you’re thinking to what your body is doing.

The Four Square breathing method works well for many people. Inhale for four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, and then hold for four seconds. Next, take two regular breaths. Then repeat the process again.

3 Stretch Your Body

For many people mindfulness is just as much as connecting your mind to your body as it is about living in the moment. One method for being more mindful is doing simple stretches wherever you are.

If you are in an office setting, stand up and take a few steps around and then lean forward against a wall, taking the time to stretch both of your calves. Then reach up high to stretch out your arms, and bend down to touch your toes and stretch your spine. Stretching out gives you a break from your task, gets your blood flowing, gives your body more endorphins, and helps you to be aware of what your body needs in the moment.

4 Use Power Poses

When you’re feeling discouraged or stressed during the day, it can be good to connect your mind and your body by practicing power poses.

Power poses have been found helpful for people when they need to gain confidence before stressful situations, like a job interview. However, they are also useful for calming down. Striking a power pose gives you a minute to reconsider your feelings at the time and what you want your emotions to be instead.

One example of a power pose is standing with your feet hips width apart, placing your hands in fists on your hips, and looking straight ahead, or slightly up. Hold the pose for at least ten seconds while thinking about what you want to be able to do or accomplish.

5 Use Essential Oils or Other Calming Smells

Essential oils are often touted for being able to cure or at least ease almost any ailment. One of their often used purposes is calming down nervous or anxious people in times of stress. Lavender, chamomile, rose, and other scents all fulfill this purpose.

The best way to get the most out of essential oils is to inhale them. Use a diffuser or put a drop on your hand (depending on the oil) to smell throughout the day. As you take a breath of the scent, remember to work on clearing your mind and focus only on what you can feel around you, like the breaths you take, the scent in the air, and the energy you are putting out.

6 Drink Plenty of Water

An essential part of taking care of your body and your mind is drinking enough water. Taking a few sips of cold water in a moment of crisis can also help you to reset and calm down.

Try carrying a water bottle around with you throughout the day so that you can always stay hydrated. Pay attention to your body and notice the small signs of thirst that your body exhibits. This can come in the form of dry lips, a growling stomach, or a scratchy throat. As you drink, think about the ways in which you are taking care of yourself and helping your body to perform better.

7 Find Calming Sounds

Just like scents are good at calming people down, so too are sounds. Gentle, repetitive noises like rain, crashing waves, or wind chimes often help people to focus better on the task at hand. And whether that task is getting work done, falling asleep, or trying to take a few deep breaths in a stressful moment, a calming sound helps with it.

There are stations on any music app that play calming water or nature sounds, as well as videos online that will play whatever sound you’re looking for to help you have a more mindful moment.

Visit to learn more about what you can do to incorporate more mindful living and calming techniques into your daily life.

7 healthy habits that you can easily integrate in your routine Each year, many people make New Year's resolutions to live healthier lifestyles. While they may have the good intentions, they often feel overwhelmed by all that they think this goal entails. In reality, living a healthier lifestyle doesn't have to mean drastically changing your way of living all at once. You can start slowly and adopt just a few healthy habits at a time.

  1. Drink More Water

Even if you think you're drinking enough water, you're probably not getting as much as you should. Some experts recommend drinking the equivalent of your body weight in water each day, while others simply recommend drinking water until your urine is colorless. In either case, this means drinking water consistently throughout your day. One advantage of drinking this much water is that it will leave you little time to drink soda, high fructose fruit juices, or coffee. This means you'll reduce the level of sugar and other toxins in your blood supply.

While flushing toxins out of your body is one reason to drink plenty of water each day, it's not the only benefit you'll notice. As you drink more water, you'll notice that your vision seems to improve and your skin is smoother. Internally, blood flow will be improved, because the water will thin out your blood. Your digestive system will also function better and, since you'll be filling up on water, you won't be as hungry. This will help you lose weight or keep you from overeating and gaining more weight. If you feel the need for flavor, add a few drops of lemon juice to your water.

  1. Look for Tasty Alternatives

If you haven't been paying attention, grocery stores are now full of healthier alternatives to snacks and other processed foods. You can choose versions of your favorite foods that don't contain refined sugar, yet taste just as good. Similarly, you won't notice much of difference when you switch from processed grains to whole grains. By taking more time to read labels, you may find that you can eat healthier without sacrificing much in the way of taste. In many cases, you won't notice a difference at all.

Another option in replacing your high sugar and high fat foods is to replace them with plant-based foods. This is especially easy to do in terms of replacing desserts and snacks. Fruits are naturally sweet and can be enjoyed without any additives in most situations. Strawberries, grapes, cherries, kiwi, and bananas are just a few fruits that can replace your snacks and satisfy your cravings for sweets. Fruits provide the body with vitamins, antioxidants, and other nutrients to help the body stay healthy, so switching to these foods will help your immune system stay strong as well.

  1. Eat One Healthy Meal a Day

Eating a healthier diet doesn't have to be an all or nothing change. If you eat just one healthy meal per day, you can expose yourself to new tastes and reduce the harmful substances you do eat. For instance, eat a healthy lunch each day that consists of just enough meat or poultry to cover the palm of your hand. This will give you the protein you need. Finish off the meal with a fruit or vegetable. For a small dessert, eat a few almonds or some sunflower seeds. This will teach you to control your portions, while helping you get acclimated to healthier foods that may be new to you.

  1. Take Up a New Physical Activity

Living healthier isn't just about the foods you eat. It's also about increasing the amount of physical activity you get each day. Doctors recommend getting at least thirty minutes of moderate to high-intensity exercise each day, but this doesn't mean hitting the gym is your only choice. In fact, fitness experts recommend incorporating a variety of activities into your life as a means of working out several different muscle groups. Look for activities you enjoy. You might consider bicycling, hiking, swimming, skating, or jogging. The more you enjoy your activities, the more likely you are to stick with them.

  1. Indulge Yourself with Some Pampering

Living healthy also means addressing the stress that can build up from the day to day tensions. A massage helps muscle and tissue recover faster, so you'll be ready to engage in more physical activities sooner. For many people, getting a massage even once per week helps them feel better physically and

  1. Meditate

Meditation is one of the best ways to ease stress in the mind. Even if you do indulge in the occasional massage, it's important to do something to reduce stress on a daily basis and meditation is ideal for that. It's an opportunity to unwind and give your thoughts more clarity and focus. In fact, some people will sneak off to a closet or to their car to meditate for five minutes after an especially challenging experience. When they return, they feel energized, productive, and refreshed.

  1. Improve Your Sleeping Habits

No matter how healthy you eat and how much exercise you get, failing to get seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night will take its toll. If you're not getting enough sleep each night, it may be time to re-examine your bedtime habits. First, you should be shutting off all electronic devices up to one hour before bed. The blue light these screens give off interrupt the brain's ability to regulate sleep. Similarly, you should stop consuming caffeinated products by mid-afternoon. If you're still having trouble falling asleep, look at your sleeping quarters. Is your bedding clean and comfortable? Will earplugs or an eye mask help block distractions? These are all changes you can make that can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep throughout the night.

These are just a few changes you can make to help you live healthier. By making gradual changes, you'll feel less like you're having to make significant sacrifices. Over time, you'll find that even these subtle changes are helping you to feel healthier and happier. This will encourage you to make a bigger dedication to healthy living and, before long, you'll find that you have kept your New Year's resolution.

3 Common Swallowing Disorders and How to Treat Them When a person is first diagnosed with dysphagia or a swallowing problem, they may not know where to turn. However, this condition is very common and there is help for those who have been given this diagnosis. What are some common swallowing issues and how are they treated?

Parkinson’s Disease

Many people who suffer from Parkinson’s Disease find it hard to swallow. In fact, this condition affects up to 90 percent of patients with this condition. When a person with Parkinson's Disease eats, his or her mandible no longer functions properly and the tongue pumping that occurs when he or she chews is slowed. Throat muscles which are weak likewise make it harder to move the food to the esophagus where the next stage of digestion occurs. When the food does make it to the esophagus, the person may find it hard to swallow and this increases his or her risk of aspiration. This may be caused by an impairment of the upper extremities, impulsive feeding that is commonly seen with advanced stages of the disease, or cognitive impairment.

Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD)

GERD is a condition in which the valve at the base of the esophagus does not close properly when a person consumes food or a drink. As a result, the food or drink comes back up into the esophagus and leads to symptoms of heartburn or acid regurgitation. However, a person must experience symptoms two or more times a week before the doctor will run tests to determine if this is nothing more than heartburn, if it is GERD, or if something else is going on that needs to be further investigated. A number of treatments are available for individuals who suffer from this condition, ranging from the use of Simply Thick to surgery to correct a hiatal hernia that may be leading to symptoms. Doctors typically start with the least invasive treatment option and work their way through the treatments until they discover the one that is best for the patient.

Achalasia is another swallowing disorder that may interfere with a person’s ability to eat. Approximately 3,000 individuals in the United States are diagnosed with this condition each year, mostly adults. When a person with achalasia eats, the valve located at the base of the esophagus does not open as it should. As a result, the food backs up into the esophagus and the individual may find he or she vomits undigested food or suffers from weight loss, chest pains, and heartburn. Researchers have been unable to determine a cause for this condition but believe it may be related to a virus or to the body’s immune system attacking the nerve cells found in the muscle layers of the esophagus. Furthermore, this condition may put a person more at risk of developing esophageal cancer.

Any person who suspects they have a swallowing disorder should see a doctor immediately. Help is available for these patients and advances are being made in medicine every day. If a person cannot swallow correctly, he or she may become malnourished, lose weight, and put himself at risk of more serious conditions. Don’t allow this to happen when the right treatment can allow a person to enjoy food and drinks once again. It’s simply a matter of finding the cause and the right treatment plan.

The Best Supplements to Give You a Much Needed Testosterone Boost Testosterone in the right levels is very important for males as it is the key male sex hormone. It gives males all those masculine qualities such as deeper voices and muscle mass. However, it is important for females too. It promotes fat loss and good health in addition to growing muscle.

As men grow older, testosterone levels tend to go on a steady decline. Today, testosterone levels in men are lower than ever. Experts allege that this is due to unhealthy lifestyles with healthy living taking a backseat.

There is therefore a growing need for testosterone boosters which come in the form of natural supplements that can increase the levels of your testosterone. Which are the top testo boosters? Here is a list of a few of the top supplements:

D-Aspartic acid

D-Aspartic is a natural amino acid that works by increasing the luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones. The luteinizing hormone is crucial because it forms the Leydig cells in the testes that aid in the production of more testosterone.

  • Given to men with lower sperm counts, the count doubles as it aids in sperm quality and production
  • Increases strength and muscle mass

D-Aspartic acid could be beneficial mostly for people with low testosterone levels and those suffering from sexual dysfunction. It may not have any effects on people with normal testosterone levels.

Vitamin D

This one has always been a good reason to bask in the sun a little, especially the early morning one. Vitamin D is produced in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as a steroid hormone in the body in its active form.

7 well known benefits from regular dental checkups Most people dread the idea of going to the dentist; however, these seven well-known benefits from regular dental checkups should help you see things differently. If you do visit the dentist for a checkup regularly, you are less likely to have serious oral-related issues that result in painful procedures. You will also save money, improve your overall health and make the dental care process more enjoyable for the kids in your life.

Early Detection

Just like going to the doctor’s office each year for a regular physical, it is essential that you go to the dentist office for regular checkups. These checkups are critical in early detection of serious oral conditions. They can also help to prevent issues from becoming serious. During these visits, your dental team will provide you with a professional cleaning to eliminate plaque buildup and look for potential problem areas. The team will also advise you on the best way to care for your teeth based on your specific needs and eating and drinking habits.

Save Money

One of the greatest benefits of regular dental checkups is that you can save thousands of dollars in dental care. When you have regular cleanings you help to prevent problems from developing. The fewer dental procedures you have to incur the less expensive it will be for you and your family. Whether you have a high or low deductible, all out-of-pocket expenses add up quickly. Because most dental visits are offered during traditional working hours you will also save money by not having to take time off work to go to the dentist and save money on transportation, parking, etc., to and from dentist appointments. And it will save you time and money by not having to take time to recover from potentially painful procedures.

Self-Esteem and Confidence

When you feel good about yourself your smile is wider and brighter. If you are insecure about your teeth or you are in pain due to teeth or mouth issues, you are less likely to be confident. This can greatly hinder your self-esteem and your relationships. It can even cause you to shy away and retreat from social events. If you do not have confidence and self-esteem, this can also prohibit you from performing well at work and seeking promotions. The state of your teeth is directly related to your self-esteem and confidence. With regular checkups, you can prevent unsightly staining and plaque buildup and improve the appearance of your smile.

Lead By Example

The kids in your life look to you to be an example in dental care. Whether you are an active part in the lives of your children, nieces and nephews or the kids of your friends, they pay close attention to every move you make. It is highly important that you lead by example in dental care for all children in your life. You should show them that you brush your teeth and floss every day. They should hear you speak about the pleasant experience you had at the dentist. And kids should see the positive results in your visits from your stunning smile. You can make it a fun experience for everyone with the use of dental apps.

Your Health

Your physical health is often directly related to your oral health. In fact, the state of your teeth and mouth can often reveal more serious health issues that are lurking throughout the rest of your body. Your dentist will perform an overall examination of your mouth, neck and jaw to determine whether or not a more serious issue might be occurring pertaining to your physical health. A dentist can recommend that you visit your physician for further examination if a health concern exists. One of such concerns is that if you have inflammation in your mouth, you may also have inflammation in your body that could possibly lead to serious health conditions, such as heart disease.

Bad Breath Prevention

Bad breath can occur for any number of reasons, including poor oral hygiene and gum disease, and everyone is vulnerable to its effects. You can develop bad breath from bacteria that looms in your mouth. If you do not floss regularly, bacteria can linger on the food particles stuck in your teeth and cause a terrible odor to release. You can also get bad breath by not drinking enough water, a sinus infection and bacteria on your tonsils and in your stomach. A dentist can help determine the root cause of the problem and provide you with solutions to resolve and prevent bad breath.

A Positive Experience

When you establish a good rapport and relationship with your dental health professionals your overall experience and association with the dentist office will become a positive one. Professionals in any industry, such as those at, genuinely care about their patients. If they are able to see you more than every few years, they can get to know you personally and they will be better able to serve you in a more efficient and effective manner. Also, the more open you are about your dental habits the easier it will be for them to recommend you with a superior dental care routine.

Regular dental checkups will improve your quality of life in nearly countless ways. If you visit the dentist a few times a year, you will save money, be more confident and improve your health. Do not forget that the young ones in your life are watching closely so be sure to brush your teeth and floss every day.

7 ways contaminated water is making you sick Generally speaking, the water that comes through the faucets in our homes are supplied by local municipalities. Although this is more convenient than buying bottled water or getting water from a well, there are some risks associated with drinking this water. Of course, this is not to discount the filtration process that most municipalities implement before the water is made available to us, but it is worth noting that the process can add chemicals and other contaminants to the water that could jeopardize our health. In this article we will detail some of the contaminants typically found in local water and ways to minimize the health associated with drinking it.

The process that most municipalities use to remove microbes, particulates and other contaminants from water require using disinfectants, additives, and other chemicals. While such procedures are generally safe, they can sometimes replace one form of contamination with another. Some of the additives commonly are applied to drinking water include fluoride, chloramines, and chlorine. To further put all of this into context, let's take a look at how some of these additives affect drinking water:

Fluoride – While fluoride may be great for our oral health, it can also be toxic in high amounts. What causes high levels of fluoride in drinking water? Well, inadequate monitoring, naturally-occurring deposits, and faulty equipment can all play a role. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), high levels of fluoride can damage tooth enamel and also lead to joint pain and reduced bone density.

Chloramines – If you are not already familiar with chloramines, they are disinfectants commonly used in water filtration. Basically, chloramines are the byproduct of combining chlorine with ammonia. Although they do a remarkable job in filtering drinking water, chloramines can be harmful to fish and other wildlife and may pose some health risks if consumed in large amounts.

Chlorine – While effective in destroying harmful viruses and bacteria in our drinking water and making it safe for consumption, chlorine can negatively affect how water smells and taste. Also, studies have shown that bathing in chlorinated water can result in dry or itchy skin. Similar to chloramines, consuming large amounts of chlorinated water can pose some health risks.

Along with the additives and contaminants that enter our drinking water during the filtration process, the pipes that work to deliver water to our homes can also contribute to making us sick. How can pipes contaminate drinking water, you ask? Well, contamination occurs as water travels through brass or copper pipes. This contamination can adversely affect the taste, smell, and color of the water we drink.

Copper toxicity can occur if we drink water that has passed through corroded copper pipes while traveling to the faucets in our homes. Exposure to high levels of copper can cause stomach pain as well as nausea and vomiting. In severe cases, copper can impact kidney function and may also lead to anemia.

Lead poisoning can be difficult to detect in drinking water, but it can cause serious health problems if consumed in large amounts. The onset of health problems caused by drinking water containing lead typically occurs slowly and with little to no warning signs. Similar to copper toxicity, lead poisoning occurs when water travels through corroded pipes either in our homes or through local municipalities. How does lead poisoning impact our health? Well, it can cause a series of health problems including constipation, stomach pain, and vomiting. In severe cases, lead poisoning may result in brain damage and decreased kidney function.

While not as common as it was a few decades ago, well water is still being used in some communities. And although it is not subject to the filtration process used by local municipalities, it carries its own set of health risks. Some of the contaminants found in well water include

Minerals and chemicals – Although naturally-occurring, high levels of minerals and chemicals found in well water can be dangerous to our health. That said, the chemicals and minerals found in well water is a byproduct of pesticides and fertilizers that have leached into the water supply. It is also worth noting that these contaminants do not alter the taste or smell of the water; however, they can cause upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting when consumed in large amounts.

Waste material – In addition to pesticides and fertilizers, most well water also contains fecal matter that is produced by animals and leached from nearby septic tanks. These two types of waste materials can result in E. coli and fecal coliform bacteria, which can significantly impact one's health.

One of the easiest ways to protect yourself from waterborne contaminants would be to only drink bottled water; however, this is not always a practical or convenient solution for some people. While the filtration process provided by most municipalities is good, there is obviously room for improvement. That said, investing in a personal water filtration may be a good idea. What is a water filtration system, you ask? Well, they are systems that can be attached to your existing faucet to help remove harmful particles and contaminants from your water. They are also available as stand-alone systems. Some of the more popular filtration systems include

Activated carbon charcoal filters – These systems are predicated on reverse osmosis, which entails using a purification technology to help remove impurities and larger particles from drinking water.

Stand-alone filtration systems – These systems are similar to that of Activated carbon charcoal filters, which are attached to your faucet and designed to remove contaminants commonly found in drinking water. However, they can be placed on your countertop where they don't impede the use of your faucet.

If you are concerned about the drinking water in your home, you should consider investing in a filtration system. To find the best brands and models for you and your family, consider doing an internet search using the keywords online water filtration.

The 15 Best New Year's Resolutions for Your Health

Are you unsure which of your priorities is most important in the New Year? Do you have plenty of dreams for the future, but not many concrete plans?

Check out these 15 resolutions you can make to improve your physical and mental well being during the next 12 months and beyond.

Resolutions to Improve Your Physical Health

1. Eat right. Focus on adopting healthy eating habits rather than resorting to crash diets. Learn to eat more slowly and reduce your portion sizes.

  • Eat a variety of foods with plenty of complex carbohydrates, fresh vegetables and fruits. Add in some lean proteins and healthy fats to complete your meals.

2. Exercise daily. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise every day. Round that out with training for strength and flexibility.

  • Find a variety of activities that you enjoy, like brisk walks and biking.
  • Get an exercise ball or treadmill that you can use at home on busy days or when the weather outside is unpleasant.

3. Get adequate rest and sleep. Insufficient sleep can make you more vulnerable to weight gain and many illnesses. Different individuals need different amounts of sleep, but the conventional eight hours is a good rule for most people. If you constantly feel drowsy, try going to bed earlier.

4. Take care of your bones. Almost half of all women over 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture. Men can be at risk too. Eat plenty of foods rich in calcium and vitamin D. Get some sunshine and lift weights or do other resistance training.

5. Practice good posture. Strong abdominal muscles will protect your back from injury and help you look younger. Get used to pressing your navel towards your lower back and keeping your shoulders relaxed. Breathe from your abdomen rather than your chest.

6. Quit smoking. You probably already know all the dangers of smoking, including lung cancer and premature aging.

  • Many people make several attempts before quitting for good so be open to various cessation methods. Your doctor may be able to help you find the right plan for you.

7. Drink alcohol in moderation. Some people may need to avoid alcohol all together. Others can stay safe within the general limits of one drink a day for women and two for men. Avoid alcohol before bed so you get good quality sleep.

8. See your doctor. Regular checkups enable early treatment to keep small health issues from growing worse. If you can't afford health insurance, you may be able to get some free or inexpensive screenings at local pharmacies and health fairs.

Resolutions to Improve Your Mental Health

1. Manage stress. Keeping stress under control lets you enjoy life more. Set aside time each day for meditation or listening to soothing music.

2. Build healthy relationships. Develop a strong network of support. Communicate openly and with respect.

3. Monitor your thoughts. Think positive. Divert your attention away from nonproductive worrying by brainstorming creative solutions to challenging situations.

4. Practice positive self talk. Be a good friend to yourself. Remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments.

5. Be compassionate. Show compassion to yourself and others. Be aware of the suffering in the world and look for ways to alleviate it.

6. Engage in lifelong learning. Keep your mind sharp by giving it constant challenges. Take adult education classes or listen to foreign language tapes.

7. Consider counseling. It's wise and courageous to ask for help when you need it. Professional counseling or spiritual practices may help you bounce back from unfortunate events like divorce or unemployment. They can be useful for smaller things, too, like if you've just had a rough week.

While many New Year's resolutions get discarded faster than the dried out Christmas tree, there are ways to make them stick. Set specific goals that are meaningful and attainable for you. Improving your physical and mental health is a great gift for yourself and your whole family.

Teaching Healthy Boundaries to Your Kids

Even when your children are quite small, it’s important to begin instructing them about boundaries between themselves and others. A child who grows up in a home having healthy limits will also learn to apply such boundaries in his own life.

What Does “Boundary” mean?

A boundary signifies a limit that a person has. Such limits can be physical or emotional.

  1. Physical boundaries. This limit can be physical and tangible, like one’s own body parts. Explaining to a child that his body belongs only to him and nobody else teaches him to develop a sense of his physical self. Explaining, “Daddy’s body belongs to him” and “Your body belongs to you” is a good place to start.
  2. Emotional boundaries. Another type of boundary is more emotional than physical. Teaching children that it’s not okay to say hurtful things to others is an example of an emotional boundary. Teasing would be another way of crossing a person’s emotional boundary.

In a sense, boundaries are rules that you live by. Living with boundaries basically means, “I won’t do anything to harm you” and “I expect you not to do anything to harm me, but if you do, I’ll let you know.”

Teaching Boundaries

When you’re raising kids to have healthy boundaries, it’s important to allow the children to have and express their own feelings. This one can be pretty tough for some parents as it isn’t unusual for parents to squelch a child’s healthy behavioral expression.

For example, if a 4-year-old starts crying and stomps his feet, what would you do as a parent? One healthy strategy to ensure your 4-year-old develops healthy boundaries is to help him label his feelings. Say something like, “I see that you’re frustrated that you can’t have the candy right now. Maybe you can have some candy after dinner.” Then, move on with life.

You helped him to label his emotions. You chose not to punish him or demand that he stop crying or “Straighten up right now.” As a parent, you just showed acceptance of your child’s feelings. Each time you behave this way as a parent, you’re reinforcing your child’s natural sense of self and boundaries.

Sometimes, there will be situations when you find it prudent to explain some boundary situations or “rules” to a child. For example, explaining to a child that no one but a doctor when Mom or Dad is also present should touch the child where their bathing suit fits is an effective way to teach a child the limits and boundaries related to his own body.

Modeling Boundaries

Ultimately, the single best way to teach children healthy boundaries is for parents to have healthy boundaries themselves and to model them in the home.

Showing respect for each person in the house, ensuring everyone has rights to their feelings and appropriate expressions of them, and talking openly and honestly about any challenging issues demonstrate healthy boundaries for children.

From the time your children are born, you’re charged to teach them many things so they’ll grow up to be happy, healthy members of society. Teaching your children about limits and boundaries shows your kids a truly healthy way to live.

Parents who ensure their kids grow up learning about limits and boundaries provide a solid foundation for their children’s futures. Apply some of these methods in your home to teach your kids about having and maintaining healthy limits and boundaries. Your kids will thrive!

Holiday Dieting Tips - How to Have Fun and Stay Healthy The holidays are a special time for all, and you should take the time to indulge yourself. However, at the same time you should keep your health in mind because it's easy to be tempted into going overboard.

It all starts with Halloween and all the extra treats that are lingering in your candy bowl. Then we're lead into Thanksgiving, where the average person will ingest over 3 times the number of calories that they should be eating, or even more.

Then the winter holidays come along. Family togetherness usually equals lots of snacking and appetizers and big meals. Also, don't forget all the baked treats! Can you eat all of these things? The answer is yes, but in moderation.

Follow these tips to help you stay in control of your fork:

  1. Go in with a Plan. Before you put yourself into temptation, tell yourself how much you're allowed to eat. In the weeks following Halloween, save yourself 10 pieces of candy to eat. Give the rest away to coworkers and neighbors. For Thanksgiving and other family holidays, allow yourself to indulge on one item such as the appetizers or the dessert - not both. Remember, you should have a plan and guide!
  1. Don't Be Too Strict. While you may be tempted to be tough on yourself during other times of the year, the holidays are a time you should allow for some relaxation from the strict behavior. Don't try to get through entire evenings without enjoying any of the food. The starvation diet only works for so long until you fail and over-consume. Work on your moderation skills instead.
  1. Don't Punish Yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. If you do slip up and overeat one day, in the long run it won't make much of a difference. Just tell yourself that you'll try harder next time. Don't be tempted to just give up and continue the poor eating decisions. It's when you have many bad days in a row that you can ruin a good diet plan.
  1. Watch the Alcohol Intake. It's true; alcohol usually flows freely at holiday events. You can indulge yourself here as well. While you may be able to get away with having a few drinks spread out over the evening, remember that the calories add up. Consider alternating between alcoholic drinks and pure, refreshing water.
  1. Wear Tight Fitting Clothes. If you have some issues controlling your holiday behaviors, consider wearing some tight fitting clothes. Don't make yourself too uncomfortable, but at the same time you'll want to feel the reminder if you begin to eat too much.
  1. Plan Healthy Meals. If you're hosting any of the holiday events, consider going with some healthier alternatives to some popular meals. Healthy doesn't always mean bland or unappealing. Get creative and try some new recipes.
  1. Remember to Take Breaks. During a long evening with family and friends, sometimes you'll lose track of your eating habits. Make it a point to take breaks where you know there isn't a plate or a drink in your hand. Concentrate on the conversations you're having instead.
  1. Eat Before You Go. If you're off to a holiday event at someone else's house, eat something healthy before you leave. This is especially important if you know you'll be tempted by all the unhealthy treats that'll be available. If you aren't particularly hungry when you show up, you won't feel such an urge to begin eating.

Just remember to have a good time! If you're bummed about not getting to eat everything that you want, concentrate on all the other aspects of the holidays. There are many other fun activities to engage in that don't involve eating!

How to (and How NOT to) Adopt Healthy Habits

Have you tried to make healthy changes in your life without success? Did you encounter obstacles that made you feel like giving up?

Having the kind of lifestyle that promotes health and wellness takes some work. But it certainly helps when you have an idea of the direction to take.

This is a quick guide to positive ways towards a healthier lifestyle and techniques to avoid in your quest.

The Healthy Way Towards a Healthy Lifestyle

  1. Get adequate rest. You can get better results from anything you do if you get enough rest. When you're rested, you feel more energetic, confident, and committed. Give yourself a head start on a healthy lifestyle.
  • Remember, rest doesn’t always equate to sleep. Even during your day at work, take breaks to rest. This will keep your mind focused and you’ll feel energized to produce your best work.
  1. Design your diet for success. Just like with anything else, a good plan helps you achieve your desired results. Spending time designing your diet will pay off for you.
  • Make a list of all the things you have in your fridge and cupboard. Research the nutritional information on these items.
  • Which ones are good and which ones aren't? Replace the bad food choices with healthier options, and then keep the healthy ones coming!
  1. Self-acceptance. If you love yourself for who you are on the inside, then everything else easily falls into place.
  • Think of all your positive attributes. What aspects of your being make you most proud? It's very likely you'll find a long list of awesome things to love about you! Embrace them and use them as motivation to persevere.

Avoid These Unhealthy Strategies When Trying to Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle

  1. Crash dieting. It's almost impossible to do something well if you don’t dedicate the time to it. That's also the case with crash dieting. Rushing into a diet plan to get immediate results is rarely a successful approach, and the results are only temporary.
  • Crash dieting may give you the end result you want, but it may be at the cost of your overall health.
  • Choosing a sensible schedule of gradual weight loss due to enhanced nutrition and exercise will lead you to a weight you’re happy with and then being able to maintain it as well.
  1. Erratic workout schedule. Commitment is necessary if you want to get real results from your workout. Setting a specific time for exercise is the best approach for it to be effective.
  • Try to set a schedule you can stick to. If you commit to three evenings per week, make it happen.
  • Vary your exercises and workouts. Choose activities you enjoy so you can look forward to having a more active lifestyle rather than just dreading workouts.
  • Leave everything else behind when it's workout time. You'll get more out of the workout that way.
  1. Doing it to please others. You'll never be satisfied with life if you spend time living according to the expectations of others. You have to want something for yourself in order to feel happy when you get it.
  • Are there unhealthy aspects of your life? Do they affect you or those around you?
  • You first have to recognize and accept the negative impact on your own life. Otherwise, you may not be able to make the necessary adjustments easily.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle may not be easy, but you can do it. This is especially true if you've allowed negative habits to take over for a long time. Pace yourself. Do a little at a time. Pretty soon, you'll realize you have a better quality of life than you ever imagined!

Does Going to the Dentist Make You Nervous?

I am writing this article based on my personal experience. I've always had issues with going to the dentist and as a result, would only go when I HAD to. After getting into the nutrition game and using one of my products, I found out that I don't have to be nervous or avoid the dentist.

Let me tell you a story about having to have some teeth pulled out a couple of years ago. Before going to the dentist I took six glasses - yes, SIX glass of my calcium and magnesium product. I hope this doesn't sound like I'm promoting my product because my whole purpose here is to enlighten you and if you're one of those people who can't go or stress like crazy when having to go to the dentist, there is a solution.

I got to the dentist, who happens to be a friend of mine who gives out single packets to his patients, and went through the start-up routine - checking my teeth, isolating what needed to be done and setting me up for it.

After opening my mouth and his assistant checking everything, I was sitting there for several minutes and then she got me to open my mouth for the injection. I didn't feel anything at all and was happy about that.

They then started fiddling in my mouth and doing the dentist thing. After about 10 minutes or so I managed to ask when they were going to actually pull the teeth.

To my surprise he said it was already done. I couldn't believe it. The injection, the teeth being pulled and all the additional things they do and I did NOT feel a thing and I was pretty relaxed.

I really wish I could have had that when I was a kid. Dentist visits were always traumatic and not my favorite pastime. I have subsequently had a few others tell me how it helped them to get over their dental treatment.

Here's one from a trucker. "Here a while back, Desiree and I were talking and I mentioned to her I was going to the dentist and that I had to have a tooth filled and crown put on one of my teeth. She said I should drink two glasses of the calmag (calcium and magnesium) and that it would help. I didn't put a lot of attention on it but I thought it wouldn't hurt. So, that day I drank a glass in the morning then a couple of hours later another two.

"So, I went to the dentist and I was very relaxed. Normally, I'm a bit tense from holding my mouth open and it's kind of not like I'm fighting the dentist but I'm not very comfortable. I noticed that it was a lot easier to hold my mouth open while he worked on the tooth.

"After the dental work was done, I went back home and the Novocaine started wearing off and I noticed that my jaw - the area around my jaw where he worked on my tooth - wasn't sore because normally it would be sore and it would ache from having to hold my mouth open in an awkward position. I didn't have any of that and I was not uncomfortable.

"It just felt as if I hadn't had the dental work done. The only way I could tell that I'd had it done was that my gum-line was a bit sore, which is normal, from him working on the tooth but I could not believe the difference it made not having those tense jaw muscles. I was really surprised. It was almost unbelievable but it worked really great.

Another thing, I felt so good I did my exercise routine that day. I normally wouldn't do my exercises after having dental work done like that."

I really want to let people know they can have dental work done painlessly and stress-free.

Basically, calcium gluconate is the most potent painkiller and is completely natural and relaxes the muscles via the nerves.

8 Tips For Eating Healthy While Traveling

If you travel for work or pleasure, you know that healthy food can sometimes be hard to come by. Or I should at least say there are so many temptations out there that the healthy options seem few and far between. Being prepared is 75% of the battle when it comes to eating healthy while traveling. It definitely requires a little planning and a special nutritional strategy. Luckily, you can adhere to your healthy eating plan with a little extra work. These 8 tips for healthy eating while traveling provide some solid ideas to staying on track while on the go.

1. Location - When you're choosing where to stay, it's all about location. Let's say you're traveling for work and you'll be in the same location for at least a few days. Finding a spot that's close to healthy resources is key. Is there a grocery store nearby that you can run to for healthy snacks and/or meals? Are there healthy cafes or restaurants within walking distance that you can stop in for a bite to eat? It's easy to make the excuse that you can't eat healthy while on the road if there aren't good options around you. Don't make that your excuse. Choose as wisely as you can to set yourself up for success.

2. Accommodations With A Kitchen or Kitchenette - One of the best ways to ensure healthy eating while traveling is to have access to some type of kitchen. Extended stay hotels, vacation rentals and Air B & B are all great options if convenient to your location. If a kitchen isn't available, having a refrigerator in your hotel room for some healthy options is a great alternative. The point being that if you have either a kitchen or a refrigerator, you have the ability stock up with good snacks and easy meals. Things like fresh fruit and vegetables, bottled water, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, nuts, natural peanut butter, rotisserie chicken and canned fish are fantastic options that are easy to store and don't require a lot of prep work to create a quick meal or snack.

3. Ship Items Before - Another strategy would be to ship your favorite dry goods to your location before hand. Protein powder, beans, nuts, canned tuna, bread and quick cooking oats are all items you could have sent prior to your arrival so that you have some healthy options waiting for you.

4. Carry A Cooler - Tote your health food around with you. Stock a cooler full of your favorite healthy snacks, sandwiches, bottled water and anything you need for the day. This options works well if you can drive to your location and bring your cooler with you. If you're flying, you'll need a collapsible cooler to pack in your suitcase.

5. Research Restaurants In The Area - Do your research before you go. Even if you have access to a kitchen or a refrigerator, you still may want or need to eat for a few meals. Find out what restaurants are in the area and which menus offer healthy options that interest you. You can plan any outings to one of these restaurants and know what you're going to eat when you walk in the door.

6. Protein Powder - Protein is often the hardest thing to come by. Healthy eating on the go is made much easier if you can bring some protein powder with you. Even it it's a back up, you know you have a good protein source to go to if you can't find a viable option. Sometimes your healthy eating strategy might require using a combination of options. For example, finding some fruit and vegetables might be easy but grabbing a protein source might be pretty expensive. In certain cases, protein powder can fill in the gaps.

7. Supergreen Supplement - It's often times very difficult to get the correct amount of vegetables in when traveling. This is the perfect time to incorporate a great supplement like Amazing Grass, Green Defense or Greens +. A supplement is just that - a way to supplement your diet. While this shouldn't be your mainstay to getting in vegetables, it can always be used as a way to up your micronutrient intake and get some greens into your diet.

8. Bring Homemade Snacks - Bring homemade non-perishable snacks with you. Homemade granola or protein bars, protein muffins, kale chips and homemade granola or trail mix are all wonderful options to take with you. If you have healthy food with you, chances are that you'll eat that healthy food rather than seeking out the junky stuff.

If you'll notice (or maybe you already have), the common theme here is that you need to be prepared. If you're committed to a goal of weight loss, a health goal or just want to ensure you're eating good quality meals, you've got to set yourself up for success. Healthy eating while traveling is totally doable but it does require a bit of planning and strategy to make it work.

A Quick Guide to Obtaining Healthcare Coverage

Do you have health insurance? It is undeniable that health insurance makes healthcare more accessible, including preventive services such as screenings and regular check-ups with your doctor.

Consider the fact that only a third of the uninsured U.S population scheduled a preventive visit with their doctor in 2013. On the other hand, 74% of adults with health insurance saw their doctor for a preventive visit during the same year.

If you don’t have insurance, or have a policy that doesn’t meet your needs, it’s important that you learn more about healthcare coverage to find a policy that matches your needs and your budget.

Ask yourself these important questions before purchasing a policy:

1. What is the Affordable Healthcare Act? The purpose of the Affordable Healthcare Act is to make health insurance more accessible by extending Medicaid coverage, creating a marketplace where you can shop for policies, and requiring insurance providers to offer coverage to clients in spite of pre-existing health conditions.

  • However, this law also makes it mandatory to purchase healthcare. If you’re not insured, the government levies a fine with your income taxes. The amount of this fine is $95 or 1% of your income (depending on which is greater) and will go up next year.

2. Are you eligible for Medicaid or Medicare? You’re eligible for Medicare if you’re over the age of 65 and have been paying Medicare tax for at least 10 years. Medicaid coverage is available on a state level, which means requirements vary depending on where you live.

  • The Affordable Care Act sets the minimum income that makes you eligible for Medicaid at 133% of the federal poverty level. It’s possible that your state offers coverage to individuals who earn more.
  • Even if you’re eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, you can also purchase additional coverage if you feel that these programs do not entirely meet your needs.

3. What are your options if you don’t qualify for Medicaid or Medicare? You still have many options:

  • You can purchase insurance on the website and possibly qualify for other subsidies.
  • You might also receive coverage through your employer.
  • If you’re under the age of 24, your parents can include you on their policy.
  • In addition, you can also find alternative personal policies outside these realms.

4. What factors should you consider when choosing a policy? It’s important to select a health insurance policy that corresponds to your needs and budget. Consider these factors before purchasing coverage:

  • Monthly premiums. This corresponds to the amount you will have to pay on a monthly basis to receive coverage.
  • This is your portion of your medical expenses – before your insurance even starts to cover your expenses. Most policies include a co-pay for doctor appointments and a larger deductible if you need surgery or another expensive form of treatment.
  • Amount of coverage offered. What percentage of your medical expenses will the insurance company pay? Is there a maximum amount?
  • Reputation of your health insurance provider. Choose a company with good reviews. Your insurance provider should value customer service and process claims quickly and efficiently.

5. Which factors influence your health insurance premiums? Your premiums are based on how likely you are to need coverage for medical expenses. These are the factors healthcare insurance providers look at:

  • Your age. Purchasing healthcare coverage while you’re young and healthy will help you secure low premiums.
  • Your location. The cost of living in your area can affect your premiums.
  • Using tobacco could result in your premiums being 50% higher than the premiums offered to a non-smoker.
  • The type of plan you purchase. Premiums are higher for policies with lower out-of-pocket amounts.

There are many downsides to not having healthcare, including putting off screenings for a number of health conditions and not scheduling regular check-ups with your doctor. Should you become ill or injured, you would end up with huge medical bills.

A more important question to ask yourself might be, “Can I afford not to have health insurance?”
